GRYP in Indiana, USA
They came from Oosteeklo in Flanders and settled at South Bend Indiana

> [Nederlands]

Louis and Marie Gryp lived at Oosteeklo in Flanders and raised there, as this picture from 1898 shows, a big family.

First row of children: Julia, Emiel, Sidonia, Romanie, Louise, Leontine, Leon and Camilla
On the last row: August, Hendrik, Julius, Alois and Karel

Both parents, on this picture in the front, died shortly after each other in 1905. Some of their children then emigrated to America. They settled at South Bend, Indiana, a region where already more Flemish people were living.

  THE IMMIGRANTS

In the immigrant register of Ellis Island, where all the immigrants who arrived at New York were recorded, the following Gryp's from Oosteeklo were found.

Emiel Gryp, 25 years of age and single, arrived at Ellis Island on September 19, 1912, with the Lusitania. He was already a resident from South Bend, Indiana. This means he already moved to the USA prior to this return trip to the old country.

Together with him on the ship is his brother Karel Gryp, 34 years of age and married.

A few months earlier, on July 19, 1912, Jules Gryp, 20 years of age and single, arrived at Ellis Island with the vessel Mauretania. This could be their brother Julius.
