Nicolaas Griep (1884-1973)
Immigrated from Yerseke in the Netherlands and settled in Holland, Michigan

Nicolaas Griep (Klaas) was born at Yerseke on January 21, 1884. He was the second child, and oldest son, in the family of Adriaan Griep and Cornelia Duivewaarde.

The profession of his father was originally noted as laborer, in later years as oyster-fisherman. His mother Cornelia Duivewaarde was respectively a maid and a laborer. They lived at the fishing village of Yerseke.

Whether it was because he saw no future in oyster fishing, or because he wanted to be reunited with his girl-friend, but at the age of 26 he decided to leave Yerseke.

  IMMIGRATION

According to the immigrant-registry of Ellis Island in New York, Nicolaas Griep arrived on April 5, 1910 with the vessel Noordam from Rotterdam.

He settled in Holland, Michigan.

MARRIAGE TO CATHARINE KATTE

In Michigan Nicolaas married Catharine Katte (or Catte). Three years before Nicolaas did, in 1907, she arrived in the U.S. from Kapelle, a village near Yerseke, traveling with her parents on the ship Potsdam.

Nicolaas and Catharine settled in Holland, Michigan. They bought a house on West 27th Street 121, in the same street where also his distant cousin Jan Griep lived with his family. Both Griep's worked at the tannery. Nicolaas and Catharine had four children: Cornelia (1913), Dina (1915), Adriaan (1916) and Janet (1919).

His wife Katrin died on July 11, 1966, and Nicolaas Griep on September 27, 1973, both at Holland, Michigan.

THE FOUR CHILDREN OF
NICOLAAS GRIEP AND CATHARINE CATTE

Cornelia Griep (1913-2000)
Conny Griep was the oldest daughter of Nicolaas en Catharine. She married to a man with the Dutch surname Elzinga. They had no children and lived in Michigan. Cornelia Griep, 'Aunt Kate', died on December 6, 2000.

Dena Griep (1915-..)
When the 1920 census was held, Dena Griep was five years old. She married John Mulder in Holland, Michigan and had four children: Roger, Delwyn, Marcia (Lang) and Mary (Gutierrez). They all studied at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

Information provided by Jillian Mulder, daughter of Delwyn Mulder, now living in upstate New York.

Adrian Griep (1916-1945)

Adrian Griep was born on October 11, 1916. He married his wife Minnie and had a daughter Carolyn Mae Griep. They lived at Holland, Michigan.

At April 13, 1944 he entered service in the US Army. He served in the 290 Engineer Combat Battalion and in the next winter he took part in operations in the Vosges region in France. He was killed in action on January 23, 1945 near Strasbourg.

After Adrian died, a Report of Burial was made up by a staff member of the 28th Infantry Division. So probably his unit was a part of that division, that belonged to the 7th Army under general Patch. In January 1945 the 7th Army was deployed between Strasbourg and Mulhouse and on January 20 it started an attack to conquer the so-called pocket of Colmar.
It is possible that Adrian Griep took part in these actions. In the Report of Burial the place where he was killed was noted as <Vic. Zell>. Most probably this was meant to be Vic sur Seille, a village northwest of Strasbourg.
Adrian Griep is buried at the US Military Cemetary at Epinal, France. The location of the grave is: row A, plot 13, grave 55.

Janet Griep (1919-..).
When the 1920 census was held, Janet Griep was one year and seven months old. There is no more information about her yet.
