GRIEP of Waarde/Krabbendijke
The descendants of skipper Marinus got into farming or left for elsewhere

> [Nederlands]

In 1823, Marinus Griep from Hansweert married Geertruida Blok from Waarde. They went to live at Waarde, where Marinus earned his living as ferryman. Probably he operated the ferry service to Walsoorden or Kieldrecht. A service however that didn't appear to be very profitable, because shortly after 1837 it seemed to be suspended.

So his descendants had to look after other ways to earn their living. In the orchards for instance, or by emigrating...

THE ANCESTOR AT WAARDE

Marinus Griep (1800-1875)
Skipper at Waarde

Marinus Griep was born on December 14, 1800, at Hansweert. He was the youngest son of Abraham Griep en Maria Goossen.

He must have been named after his uncle, who was drowned, because his widow acted as his godmother.

In 1823 he married at Waarde to Geertruida Blok and in 1826 he confessed his faith in the Reformed Church at Waarde. They had 11 children.

THE SECOND GENERATION

From the eleven children of Marinus and Geertruida, seven died at a very young age. Two other daughters died single at  22 and 26 years of age. Only his three sons grow up to be married and have children: Abraham (*1824), Kornelis (*1830) and Jan (*1831). At first, they were mentioned in the records as barge-hands; they , probably worked for their father. Later on they had to find another way to earn their living:
  • Abraham Griep (1824-1891) was born at Waarde and married Anna Komejan from Kruiningen. He was a laborer and a barge-hand, and his wife a working woman. Until 1883 they lived at Waarde and had seven children there. Later on they moved to Krabbendijke.
  • Kornelis Griep (1830-1918) was born at Waarde and married Catharina v.d. Berge. They had four children and died at Krabbendijke.
  • Jan Griep (1831-1901) was born at Waarde and married Elisabeth Lambregts. At Waarde they had four children. Later on the family moved to Rotterdam, where he worked as a navvy. After his first wife had died he remarried to the widow Elisabeth Lambrechtse.

THE THIRD GENERATION

Abraham had seven children, Kornelis had four and Jan had also four. Infantile mortality was high in those days: eight out of these fifteen children died at very young ages.
In this third generation there were no more skippers. They earned their living as laborers or farmhands.

From Abraham (*1824) his seven children, two died within a year and three emigrated. Only the oldest two children stayed to live at Waarde:

His brother Kornelis (*1830) had four children, but only one of them will fully grow up:
  • Jan Griep (1862-1942) married in 1884 to Geertruida Zeevaart from Kruiningen. He was a field-laborer and a farmhand. After their first child was born they moved to Krabbendijke, where they had six more children.
The daughter of youngest brother Jan (*1831), who left with his family for Rotterdam, though married a man from her home region:
  • Jannetje Griep (1859-1907) worked as a maid and married in 1885 at Rotterdam to the laborer Jan Verburg from Krabbendijke. She died at the age of 47.

THE FOURTH GENERATION

Meanwhile, members of the fourth generation <Griep at Waarde> were living in places like Rotterdam, Holland-Michigan en Buenos Aires. But also at Waarde and Krabbendijke there were Griep's left. Particularly, these were the children of both grand-nephews Marinus (*1857) and Jan (*1862).

Krabbendijke, rond 1900

Out of the sixteen children of Marinus Griep and Geertruid Wagenaar, there were only seven that did grow up. One of them stayed to live at Waarde and three of them at Krabbendijke:
  • Anna Griep (1881-1958)  married the farmer Christiaan Bastiaan Meeuwse from Krabbendijke. They had two children who both died in childhood.
  • Abraham Griep (1883-1965) earned his living as a farmhand and day laborer. He married Anna Francina Felius and had a daughter. Around 1920 the family moved to the North of Holland, and later to the Haarlemmermeer and Amsterdam.
  • Izak Griep (1887-1980) worked at the telephone company as a linesman. He stayed single and lived at Arnhem.
  • Kornelis Griep (1888-1972) worked on farms and later on owned an orchard. He married Willemina Nieuwdorp, had two sons and lived at the Oostweg 38, Krabbendijke.
  • Maria Griep (1896-1976) married the postman Cornelis van Langevelde. They lived at Krabbendijke and had three children.
  • Dina Griep (1897-1978) stayed single and lived her whole life at an institution at Wolfheze.
  • Jan Griep (1898-1972) owned an orchard. He married Janna Maria Weststrate and lived at the Weelweg 21, Waarde. They had no children.
The seven children of Jan Griep and Geertruida Zeevaart did all grow up well.

Most of them stayed to live their whole life at Krabbendijke:

THE FIFTH GENERATION

Generation five was made up by both sons of Kornelis (*1888) and the children of his two distant nephews Cornelis (*1901) and Jacob Marinus (*1905).

The two sons of Kornelis (*1888) inherited the orchards of their father at Oostweg 38:

Also Cornelis (*1901) his son spend his whole life working in the orchards:
  • Jan Marinus Griep (1926-2004), born at the nearby hamlet of Gawege, worked in the orchards of  Vogelaar and after that in the Fruit Auctions 'KEO' at Krabbendijke. He was married to Sien Lagendijk.
Finally, there were also the six children of Jacobus Marinus, that all stayed to live at Krabbendijke.

THE SIXTH GENERATION

The sixth generation of Griep's is also still present at Krabbendijke. In the telephone directory there are seven of them. All of them are descendants of Marinus Griep, who moved from Hansweert to Waarde in 1823...
