Angkor region: Places to stay

All accomodation in the area is in the town of Siem Reap, there is no hotel near the temple sites or at the airport. In town you will find lots of cheap guesthouses starting at just a few dollars a night. There are also a number of smaller hotels, catering especially to foreigners. Your taxidriver will have some suggestions. Prices in budget hotels vary from around US$ 15 for a standard room to some US$ 25 for a room with bath and airco. Remember that rooms on top floors are often cheaper as you will have to climb a few more stairs. Have a look at the room before you sign in. Also hassle a bit if you plan to stay for a week or so, you can get nice deals. Your taxidriver will have some suggestions for a hotel.
The gutted building below is the Grand Hotel d'Angkor in the center of town, dating back to the start of this century. It was aquired a few years ago by the Raffles Group of Singapore. An extensive restoration took place to bring the hotel back to its former glory. (pictures, anyone??)  It re-opened some time ago and by now it surely is the best accomodation in town.(Pictures, anyone??)Prices for the five star accomodation start at US$ 310 for a single room, US$ 360 for a double. Reservations and more info here and here.

The picture below is the new Freedom hotel run by the friendly family of Mr. Samnang. At the moment it will look a bit nicer, the top floor just had been finished when I stayed there in 1996. Rates are around 20 dollars for a room with bath and fan, US$ 5 more for airco. The hotel is situated in a quiet spot at te east side of town, about halfway on the road to the town market. There is a orange phone booth at the roadside directly in front of the hotel.

Other hotels include:

Top class:

Ta Prohm Hotel, Nokor Kok Thlok, Hotel de la Paix

Medium class:

Diamond Hotel, Neak Pean, Villa Apsara

Budget class:

Bayon Hotel.
