Tugboat BURLY

Nederlandse versie

sideview BURLY is a motortugboat of the Amsterdam kind. These tugboats are used to tow barges through the Amsterdam canals. In order to alow them to pass under the many low bridges crossing the canals they are built low (ca. 2,4 m). By folding down the steering cabin they can be made even lower. The mast can be lowered and raised from within the steering cabin by means of a cord and a counterweight. The steering cabin is situated behind the engine room. Until the 1970's many of these boats were active in and around the city of Amsterdam.

Little is known of the history of Burly. Few data is available from before 1948. The boat is built in 1921 in the city of Alkmaar probably at Volharding shipyard . She was then named "BATO". She is 15,30 m long, 3,79 m in breath and has a draught of 1,45 m.

Since 1984 the boat is owned by R. Groenen in the town Leiden. Journey's are made to a.o.  Paris, Berlin (via GDR) and the river Mosel. Also gatherings of the VDMS (vereniging de Motorsleepboot) are frequently visited.

VDMS is a society in wich owners of ancient tugboats are organized to keep these sailing monuments for the future. During the gatherings many little jewels of tugboats  can be admired.

engine: KAELBLE diesel

logo KAELBLE

Since 1967 the boat is provided with a (German built) KAELBLE 6-cylinder dieselengine built in 1959. This engine has 180 hp at 1600 rpm. In 2005 it is replaced by an overhauled engine of the same model of 1954. Through a REINTJES reversinggearbox with a reduction of 3:1 a 4-blade propellor of 40" (1 m) in diametre is driven. This results in a bollard pull of 1,7 tonnes.

The first engine was probably a 40 hp KROMHOUT 1-cylinder diesel, type M3. It was followed by two  80 hp KROMHOUT 2-cylinder diesels, type 2H3.

Although the boat is equipped modernly and according to the latest rules of the Dutch nautical inspection her authentic character has been maintained.
