Art Deco buildings frequented by the stars of yesteryear...here today for you to enjoy!

My favourite amongst the Art Deco buildings of Bandung is Villa Isola which in recent years has been the administration centre of UPI, Bandung’s University of Education. Dominic Berrety who ran a news agency in the original Netherlands East Indies completed the villa in 1933. Inside and out it was “Art Deco Magnificence”. You can drive right up to this building and quite often you’ll be allowed a free guided tour inside.

Bandung’s Grand Hotel “Savoy Homan” had a facial makeover in 1939. The façade has remained that way ever since. The hotel itself dates back to the century before and has been popular now for well over a 100 years.

It was once THE place to see movies…..The Majestic Bioscoop (Cinema) is now a cultural centre in the old centre of Bandung. Much of the interior is as it was back in the 20’s and 30’s of the last century. You’re welcome to walk in and have a look around.

Gedung Sate….or Sate building….(so called as the mast on the top centre resembles a Sate stick)….this is the provincial administration office for West Java housing the governor’s office. The Sate building is truly grand inside. The locally mined marble keeps the place naturally cool….it is possible to be shown around, sometimes just by dropping by.

The Museum of the Asian African Conference in the Centre of Bandung is a must see, if you would like to absorb some of the 20th century history of the city. Entry is free and you will be able to spend a good deal of time looking over the exhibits. Click on the photo (above) and be taken to the Museum Website.

The Bandung Hyatt is another example of modern design…...marble everywhere…..right in the centre of Bandung…...links on both above pictures…...
