This is the man who “made ‘em laugh” all around the world. Charlie Chaplin was given a huge welcome when he arrived in Batavia (now Jakarta) by ship in 1932. Dutch film cameraman Henk Aalsem’s footage recorded the event. Not long after Charlie Chaplin motored to Bandung and took a bath at the Grand Hotel Preanger. He wrote about the visit in his book “A Comedian Sees the World”. Why did the world’s most famous comedian come here? The then Dutch Oost Indies was THE place to visit for the rich and famous. This is how the Preanger looked about 16 years after the Chaplin visit...in the late 1940’s. The “modern” Grand Hotel Preanger was completed in 1923 and is one of the most attractive art deco buildings in Bandung. |

These days the “old” Preanger building has been beautifully restored and is now under the care of the company which also controls Garuda Airlines. You can walk in and have a look around and know that Charlie Chaplin enjoyed his first “real European bath” in this very building back in 1931. |
