Malapascua livingOn this page I'll try to show a little bit of live on Malapascua and the non-touristic side of Malapascua. |

| Full of pride and strength.. The cocks in The Philippines are being treated like kings. The owners give them the best food and care possible within their reach. It comes with a price though, if ready they have to prove their strength and fight for their live, there is only one survivor.. |

| Depending on where the fiesta (religious celebration) is held, there is cockfighting on every Sunday at 15:00 till sunset. You can make a bet on your favorite cock. | ![]() |

The small dried fish 'libod'. Most of the original islanders are fisherman. They eat the fish themselves and/or sell them on the mainland. |

The Filipino loves dried fish.. Unfortunately the once rich waters around Malapascua struggle to feed the islanders nowadays due to over fishing and illegal practices. A lot of innocent fisherman become victim of this and struggle every day to get a few fish on their plate. Education would most likely solve a large portion of the problem. |

Besides
legal fishery (nets and non-protected zones), there is still a lot of
illegal fishery in the waters surrounding Malapascua. Dynamite bombing
(in some dive spots you can hear the dynamite bombs go off very clearly)
or fishery within 'protected' zones is very common. Nevertheless it is
a top destination for macro and pelagics and things seem to be changing
with a newly introduced diver fee, but don't expect the coral and fish
life to be in top condition.. |

Speaking
about illegal fishery, I took this photo above the Donna Marilyn wreck.
These guys are trying to hide their dynamite from us (left red circle).
The right circle is the compressor they use to 'fish up' the dead fish
on the bottom. In Maya you can buy a dynamite bomb for 80PHP. |

Cute
hey? Being a 'Joe' (white guy) can cause some shyness among the young
islanders.. |
