Thick Pigeon | Too Crazy Cowboys

April 2003 sees the digital return of the debut album by unclassifiable New York art minimalists Thick Pigeon, originally released in October 1984 on Factory Records (FACT 85). Thick Pigeon was a duo comprising composer Stanton Miranda and instrumentalist Carter Burwell (who later became famous for his numerous Coen brothers film scores). After several singles for boutique European indie Les Disques du Crepuscule in 1982-83, including Subway and Dog, the pair linked up with New Order duo Steven Morris and Gillian Gilbert for their first full album, Too Crazy Cowboys. Recorded in Manchester in late 1983, the album offers a subtle, sculptured sequence of vignettes, described by one reviewer as "a walk through the civilisation of your soul."
Now appearing on compact disc for the first time, Too Crazy Cowboys features an update of Sudan, more hard-edged cuts such as Crime and Hank, as well as the stately Jess + Bart. The album also contains three bonus tracks: two versions of the 1984 Factory Benelux single Wheels Over Indian Trails, and the rare cut Pope, recorded for a Factory US compilation released in 1987. The booklet contains notes by Miranda, and a short historical essay. The album has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes, and features adapted artwork.
