Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts (1695)

Henry Purcell componeerde Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts ter gelegenheid van de begrafenis van koningin Mary Stuart, de vrouw van Willem III, op 5 maart 1695. In december 1694 was zij gestorven als slachtoffer van een zware pokkenepidemie.

De tekst van de anthem luidt:

Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; shut not thy merciful ears unto our prayers, but spare us, Lord most holy. O God most mighty, O holy and most merciful saviour, thou most worthy judge eternal, suffer us not at our last hour for any pains of death to fall away from thee.
