Willow creels
Fishbasket are made of willow or splitwillow and sometimes completed with leather. That is why they have some different names for it in the world like; willow creels, split willow creels, a basket, If there is leather on it they say "leather bounded". It’s difficult to find a undamaged one. Most of them are damaged by woodworm or through putrefaction in bad condition, this because it has the function to keep in the catch of the day. The fishbaskets are made in the whole world in different styles.
Glass minnow traps
The glass minnow traps are used to catch small baitfish. I think it is the typically American way of catching the small live bait. It has the model of a large bottle from which the kick is opened. They left it in the water on a cord. On the bottle is a cork or cambric and sometimes an aluminium lid, to open or close the bottle. They put in some bait in the bottle to allure the small fish to swim in the bottle. When they swim in the bottle they can not swim out anymore because the deep kick in the bottle. A forerunner of the nowadays bow-net! After a while they pick up the bottle and put the fish in the live bait kettle.
Lures
Lures are made in many forms and styles. In the States it is the most popular fishing bait. I’m starting to specialised in collecting lures in the form of a frog. Popular lure names are HEDDON, PFLUEGER, CCBCO, and the German marking D.A.M. Also the lureboxes itself are collectible. Lures made from wood with glass eyes and tack eyes are the oldest.
Ga naar boven (pagina top)Hardy
Hardy has a special place in my collection, reels, spinningreels, lures and accessories from this mark are welcome. Especial the brass Hardy reels marked with a rod in hand trade mark logo are highly wanted and become scarce.
Ga naar boven (pagina top)Reels and spinningreels
Most of the European tackle collectors are collecting reels and spinningreels. The first are collecting a spinningreel from a special mark, and the second is collecting antique reels from the 19 century. As you can read, you can collect in many ways. For the antique reels is knowledge very important!, which you can find in many books about this material. I’m looking for a Dutch Spinningreel marked MASSART, it is made in a very limited edition. It is a curious circumstance fact that this reel is made of plastic, it also has a plastic gear-wheel, as you can understand after a lot intensive use the gear-wheel is worn out and this reel will be throwed away. If someone has one in his possession and he want to sell it, I beg to recommend myself!!.
Rods
Because I have only a cramped space (which collector doesn’t have the same problem), I have a limited collection of rods. The first made rods are made of different kinds of wood, they also used for the same rod for the tips an other woodsort. After this period the bamboorods and splitcanerods were introduced. For the expensive splitcanerods they made a wooden rodframe, so it can not be damaged during transport. Also nice are the small icefishingrods which are in combinations with a rod.

Minnow buckets are used to transport the livebait fish, which the angler use to fish with fresh livebait on pike or pike-perch. They are mostly made of zinc. Some of them have a perforated inside kettle, which you can take out. They are made in many models and used all over the world. I’m looking for a nice copper minnow bucket!, which I don’t have at the moment in my collection.
Books
At the moment there are about 1000!! books about fishing tackle in the Netherlands. This is the reason that some collectors are specialising themselves only one items like: pike, carp book, etc. I’m specialised in collecting Dutch fishing books wrote for the youth.

Catalogues from renowned companies are very wanted and very handy to look for something. What did they make in that period? how expensive?. It will surprise you as you read what kinds of material there was in the older catalogues.
