The name Tara
My name is Tara Corona Hankel My grandfather was just curious why parents have chosen the name Tara for their daughter. So he asked several Tara's.
Tara Corona Hankel: ask my mother. Tineke: I just liked a name that makes people dream of white beaches and green palmtrees.
Tara Vella Wood: My mother's maiden name was Taravella (Italian) and there were no boys in her family to carry on the family name, so she split it in two and now my first name is Tara and my middle name is Vella.
Tara Marchand: I'm named after Scarlett O'Hara's plantation in "Gone with the wind".
Lady Johanna Constantine or just plain Tara: Tara was the seat of the high kings (in Ireland) . In gaelic it is "Teamhair". I've heard it's also a hindu name: one of the hindu Goddesses in Tibet, named Green Tara (one of her incarnations).
Tara Reeves: I'd have to check with my mom.
Tara Prindle: It's an Irish name meaning tower, and there is a hill in Ireland with the name.
Tara Fortier: My mother wanted to name me Tamara, but one of her friends named her daughter Tamara, so I guess she chose the next closest name. She may have chosen my name because it means "star" in Indian.
Tara Scholtz: There is a link with the tv show "The Avengers". Steed had three women work with him while the series ran. One was called Tara King. My mom liked that name. It also is Irish Gaelic for "tower" - it's a place 20 mi NE of Dublin. The ancient Irish kings were crowned there. Soon after I was born the movie "TORA! TORA! TORA!" came out. Since my name is pronounced Tah-Rah, my mom got sick of people asking her if I was named after the WWII movie.
Tara Wike: My parents just liked the name. I'm partially Irish, so the derivation of my name may be the crag city in Ireland.
Tara Gelsomino: My mom is here so you get the answer straight from the horse's mouth so to speak. She says she just really liked the name. I kind of like it myself.
Tara Estlin: My mom and dad just thought it was a pretty name.
Tara Raine Bloyd: Needing a name to put on the birth certificate my hippy parents were sitting around watching t.v. and mulling over their choices when they realized that a character on "Gunsmoke" was named Tara (pronounced like the stuff on the road) and they simultaneously decided that was a nice name. And since I was born in the middle of a flood, they would name me Tara Raine.
Tara Hartwick: My mother just liked the name. Kind of boring, huh? I think I'll make up some really cool story to tell next time I'm asked.
Tara : it's a word for a certain kind of wave in some Polynesian language.
Tara from Australia: I have also read that the meaning of Tara in Irish is "a tower of strength" which is how I sometimes like to think of myself, but the meaning "star" sounds really nice :)
Tara Pielke: I was named Tara after the plantation in Gone With the Wind. It is Irish in origin as was the character's O'hara in the movie.
Tara Dawn Miller: I was named after the Plantation Tara in the movie/book Gone With the Wind.
Tara Madhyastha: My father is from India and my mother is German; I was born and raised in the US. My parents wanted to give me a name that was Indian, but that would pass for American in the schools. They decided upon Tara, which means "Star" in Sanskrit (my father also happens to be an astrophysicist, so I suspect an inside joke).
Tara Suzanne Pellegrino: I was actually named after "Tara", the plantation in Gone With the Wind. It was my grandmother's suggestion.
Minna Tamminiemi: My real name is typical Finnish. Tara is the nickname I use when serving around the net. I chose the name from the book "Gone with the Wind". Tara is a place to go when world gets too cruel. The name Tara reminds me of the importance of things that really are valuable in this life; home, family, heritage, trust, hope, guts to believe in a new day. I think that name Tara suites especially well people who follow true values in this life and don't get lost in all the nonsense that the world offers nowadays.
Tara Fracalossi: My parents named me Tara because I (they) have a very long last name and they wanted something that would go with it and fit on the computercards that were first coming out in the '60's when I was born. I like the name very much - but it doesn't fit on any computer cards or forms still!
Tara-Robin Roy: My first name is actually hyphenated due to a clerical error, to Tara-Robin. My parents both come from Irish descent, and as Tara is a very Irish name, they found it fitting. In Gaelic, it means "tower", which is kind of fitting, as I am quite tall and slender. I guess you could say that my parents would like to say "I told you so!" The story behind Robin is a little bit more involved; it stems from the fact that when my mother was pregnant with me, there was a robin building its nest in a "towering" tree outside her bedroom window. Once it was finished building its nest, it laid eggs and had babies. My mother was struck by the connection she felt between herself and the bird mother, and thus she named me Robin. Funnily enough, I was born with red hair...
Tara (from Brandeis.edu): Well I got my name from a soap opera....although I forgot which one. Also my parents liked the movie Gone With the Wind.
Tara Loew: The way I received my name is not very exciting, my parents watched Gone With The Wind way too many times. It is not a very common name so it does have its advantages.
25Tara Boedeker: Like many of the other girls, my parents have an Irish background and thought they would like an Irish name and my grandparents insisted it be Irish. So, how did they pick which one? There is a poem by Thomas Moore about the Irish tower. My parents liked that poem and thought the name was pretty. When I was a little girl, I used to think my name was ugly because it wasn't something common like Rachel or Jennifer. But now I think it is a nice name. When you grow up, you tend to appreciate the blessing of having an uncommon name. Apparently, my parents thought it was such a nice name by itself, that they did not even bother to give me a middle name!
Thomas Moore (1779-1852):
The harp that once through Tara's Hall the soul of music shed,
Now hangs as mute on Tara's wall as if that soul were fled
So sleeps the pride of former days so glory's thrill is o'er
And hearts that once beat high for praise now feel that pulse no more
No more to chiefs and ladies bright, the harp of Tara swells
The chord alone, that breaks at night, its tale of ruin tells -
This freedom now so seldom wakes, the only throb she gives
Is when some heart indignant breaks, to show that still she lives.
Tara L Bain: I have no idea how come my parents named me Tara. They said it was the only name they could agree on and they also didn't want something too common.
tara: As for my name, it has a unusual twist. I was indeed named after the hill in Ireland that was home to the High Kings. But out of respect for such a sacred place, my name carries the lower case letter t...making my legal name tara...not Tara. I'm going to put a page on my page called "The Tara's of the Internet" and include a link to each of their pages. The intro will include a brief piece about each Tara, how they got their name, if they like the name, and how they pronounce it...Like Sara with a T or like Tar-ah.
Tara G. Dawson: I would be happy to tell you how I got my name. My mother liked Gone With the Wind so it partly came from that and I'm also of Irish descent. I pronounce it Tah-ra though so people usually pronounce it wrong since Ter-ah is the more popular pronunciation in America.
Tara Dale: I don't know why my parents gave me this name. Actually my middle name is Andrea and they were going to name me Andrea but my father thought that everyone would call me Andy. So this may be why and also that was kind of popular in 1970's when I was born.
Tara Riemer: I was named Tara from Gone With the Wind, as have many other Taras. I have never known anyone more than a year older than me with the same name, but it seems to be getting much more popular in the US!
Tara from Ontario-Canada: don't know if this will be disappointing, but there is really no story behind my name..my mom just liked it, she picked it out of a book and it stuck :) But if this means anything, she was determined her child was going to have this name, she didn't have any others picked out, and if i would have been a boy (she was determined i wasn't going to be:)) i would have had no name :)
Tara Denise Washburn: After much deliberation about what I was to be named, my mother came to a decision that I was going to be a Denise, that is, until about two weeks before I was born. She was bed riden at that point and couldn't do much of anything except for watch television, read, and sleep. She picked up a book titled "Gone with the Wind" and fell in love with the name and the beauty of the plantation owned by Scarlett O'Hara, "Tara". From that point, the decision was FINAL, her daughter was to be named Tara Denise.
Tara Gibb: The name Tara means "rocky pinnacle" I don't know exactly what that means, but I can tell you how I was named. It's actually rather funny. My father is a lover of books, as I am, and he read a particular book in which the princess was named Tara. That is where I received my name.
Tara Lay: well, i claim that my parents named me after a little town in Ireland (most of my ancestors have originated from there), but the truth is that my mother loves the movie "Gone with the wind" and the names she had picked out for me were either: Raven, Scarlett (again from "Gone with the Wind") or Tara. when i was little i never liked my name. it wasn't a very popular name. i wanted to be like everyone else. yet, as i got older i liked the orginality of the name Tara. by the time i was in high school i had grown to love my name.
Tara L. Loomis from Virginia USA: I was adopted from an orphanage in Thailand when I was about 3 months old...name was Rinna Peukhom? (something like that, I think)...anyways...my new family wanted me to (of course) be a full part of their family, so they changed my name to Tara. My mother was debating between Starr and Tara...thank goodness she chose the latter of the two. My mom chose Tara because of the movie Gone With the Wind. Have you seen it? I've watched the first half about a dozen times and only seen the whole movie once, but I loved it. Anyways, I'm named after Tara (the plantation house). And if I had gotten to choose my own name I guess I would have chosen Tara too...I can't imagine myself with any other...
Tara Holt from USA: I asked my mom and she said that she wanted something musical sounding. And she said I reminded her of dirt <g>, but I HOPE she was being sarcastic!! I think she just wanted something "uncommon."
Tara Rial from Maryland USA: Tara means earth in gaelic. I'm also named after my mother's friend. And it's an Irish name and I'm 3/4 Irish.
hey, my name is Rachel Stinson, and i happend to come across your "Tara" page. I noticed that there was a Tara Rial on your page and i was wondering if i could have her email address or if you could give her mine. I'm trying to find out what the name Rial means, but there doesn't seem to be any information in name searches. It is my brother's middle name and he was wondering what it means, so i was wondering if maybe this Tara would know.
( Email: shiloh_15@hotmail.com; in case Tara Rial reads this message)
Tara Eddy from USA: If I had been a boy, I would have been named after my father's brother, Torrance. Tara is the female derivative of that name. It didn't occur to my parents to name me Tara until after my birth. My mother approved of the name because she thought it was pretty. She never liked it when people would ask her if I had been named after the character on All My Children (the soap opera), or the house in Gone With The Wind. Growing up, I always wanted to know what "Tara" meant. I read in a magazine that "Terry" meant "energetic", or "tomboyish". Tara may sound similar to Terry, but it's true that it is much more magic in it: the Hindu goddess, the historic, haunted Irish tower. Someday I hope to go to Tara Hill in Ireland. Maybe I'll hear that harp...
Tara Asay from USA: When my mother was a little girl she saw the movie "Gone With the Wind" and the name of the plantation on it was named Tara. Well she liked the name so much that she wanted to name her first daughter Tara. That's how I was named Tara.
Tara Keim from USA: My mother is a great fan of Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone With the Wind, and she later fell in love with the movie version as well. Originally, she had wanted to name me Scarlet after the heroine, but my father protested that idea (it was one of the rare times he ever challenged my mother's wishes). Since my father wouldn't agree to her first choice, my mother chose Tara (the name of the O'Hara plantation) for me instead: she had loved the sound of it just as much. Needless to say, my father approved of this option, and I got this beautiful name.
Tara Gent from Victoria-Australia: My name came from nothing very exciting I'm afraid. There was an English TV series on at the time I was born with an actress in it called Tara King and my parents liked the name. So Tara it was.
Tara Burr from MS-USA: My mother first heard the name Tara (pronounced Terra) on Gone With The Wind, she really liked it. Around the time I was born she watched a soap opera called All My Children and there was a character with the name Tara (Terra), it was at that time she decided that's what she wanted my name to be, but she wanted it to be a little different so she pronounced it Tarr a...like black street tar and then an a.
Tara Michele Patricia Orme from Toronto-Canada: I am 4th generation Canadian and my ancestors are from Ireland (surprise). My mom tells me that Tara is what you call wheat blowing in the wind. So if you are sitting in a field somewhere and wheat is blowing in the wind, you say "Ah look at the Tara". Also because it was the seat of the high kings. As well, Bhuda's mother's name was Tara. My parents thought the name was beautiful and unique and they also felt that I was just as unique. I have all kinds of knick names; Tar-Tar, Tear, Tee, TO(my initials), and probably the most obvious Terrible. I have always been happy with my name.
Tara Pestalozzi from the USA: My mom was reading Gone With the Wind when she was pregnant with me.

Tara Boren from Oklahoma-USA: My mom liked the name from Gone With the Wind and a character from All My Children.
Tara Aiesi from MA-USA: My parents were watching a television show called "The Avengers" and they heard the prononciation of the name of one of the characters Tara King. They liked the pronounciation as they had never heard it like tar on the road with an a on the end so they decided to make that a choice if I was to be a girl...they then looked up the origin of this name and saw that it was an Irish Tower and they said that if I was a girl that would be my name....my middle name, now that's another story...
Tara Gouin from USA: Naturally my mom named me 40+ years ago, when "Gone With The Wind" was big. Only I'm no where near the size of a plantation!!! It also happens to be my favorite movie. The name "Tara" used to be very unique (as is the individual who carries it), but now, I see it is becoming more and more common.
Tara Gover from Nevada-USA: I'm sure you have seen the movie "Gone With the Wind." I suppose if you must be named after a plantation that one's as good as any. I also briefly remember a record with the song "Tara's Theme" on it, but I'm not exactly sure where it came from- probably the movie soundtrack.
Tara Cowal from Ma-USA: Some Irish friends of my parents suggested the name. Also because it means rock which symbolizes strength.
50Tara Ellis from USA: My parents named me Tara for a few reasons. One is because my mother tried to combine her name (Judi) and my father's (Terry) to make mine and my brother and sisters (Jerri, Trudy, Tara, and Jed). The other reason for my name is my mothers favorite book is Gone with the Wind, and Tara is the name of the plantation. I looked at your Tara page, it's really neat. I had heard of the tower and the rocky pinnacle but never about the Indian word Star. It's kind of weird that so many people were named after the plantation in Gone with the Wind instead of Scarlett.
Tara Shull from Indiana-USA: My mother tells me she gave me the name because of the movie, "Gone with the Wind", the name of the house; the Tara House.
Tara Lown from Pennsylvania - USA: actually my name was given to me as a way to seal the bond that my birth parents had made to eachother. my biological father's last name is Terwilliger and my mother's last name is Raimondo. my name simply means Terwilliger And Raimondo Always. it wasn't given to me because of the great movie gone with the wind. and in all actuallity, the meaning doesn't stand true, for my biological parents are no longer together.
Tara Cowen from Texas-USA: My parents named me Tara because my dad wanted something that was short and easy for me to learn to write and say, but yet unusual so that people would remember it.
Tara J Gray from Pennsylvania-USA: My mom had always liked the name from "Gone With the Wind" and then while she was pregnant with me she was watching a soap opera on which a character was named Tara and she liked the name so much that's what she named me.
