96Tara Burke from Canberra, Australia: My parents used to watch a show here called the Avengers which had a character called Tara on it. So really, I have no interesting background to my name, although mum always knew I was going to be a girl and I was always going to be Tara and we do have an Irish background so the name fits well and I like it.. I actually spell my name Taira now, just to be different.

98Hello every TARA associated with this page. My name is Tara La'Shawn Porter Thomas from Georgia - USA. My mother got my name from the story All My Children after the character TARA. I would love to join all the TARA'S of the world..

My name is Tara Lady, my mom was reading the book "Tara"...It's a spinoff from Gone With the Wind, except there is no Scarlet and "Tara" was the main character.

100Tara Moorehead: My parents named me Tara because they loved the name and its association with their favorite movie GONE WITH THE WIND. My mother was in LOVE with Clark Gable! =)

Hi, my name is Tara Young. My parents chose my name because my mom used to watch The Young and the Restless everyday when she was pregnant with me. There was a character on The Young and the Restless at that time named Tara. She loved that name so much that she named me Tara. I was born in California in the Bay Area and still live in California. I love it.

Tara Unrandecuegila from Omaha, Ne- USA: My mom lived in Australia when she was growing up, and there was a girl in her small class that everyone called Flara. They called her that because her nostrils would flare whenever she talked. My mom was a nice girl, and started being nice to Flara, who's name was really Tara. They made a promise to each other, right before my mom moved to the United States that they would name their first daughter after each other. When my mom had her first daughter, it was a time when she was in a fight with the Tara from Australia, so she named my older sister Missy, after a girl that Tara hated, and who Tara called Pissy Missy. Then my mom and Tara made up with each other, and so I was the next daughter, and she named me Tara!! : )

Tara A McMahon: My name is also Tara, I was named after some one on an English T.V. show. My Father heard the name and liked it. It is pro nounced TAR-A and not TER-A. The latter really grates on my nerves.

TaraDawn Thompson: I'm full blooded Native American. I was adopted at the age of one. I was given another name before TaraDawn. When I was brought to my new family my mother decided to give me a name that would kinda fit my heritage. So she name me Tara for the "Earth" and Dawn for the "First Light Of Day". And put them together...

Tara Lisa Rabuck from Richmond, Virginia (USA): My mom was working in a grocery store during her pregnancy when a woman came in to cash a check. This woman's name was Tara Lisa, and my mom said she was immediately struck by the woman's beauty and her beautiful name. That was it! Then, when I was little and had strep throat all the time, one of MY most favorite things to do during these times was to (you guessed it!!) watch "Gone With the Wind." I have been told that the land of the plantation was named Tara because it was enduring, everlasting, and one thing you could depend on, even during difficult times. That's a lot to live up to!

Tara from Houston, Texas (USA): Both my parents were born in India and when they came to the us they wanted a name that would be both indian and would also be an accepted name in the US. i think they saw the movie "Gone with the Wind" but i dont think they thought much of it. It just so happens that i love that movie so actually I think my parents found a great name. I was always concerned with sounding to "indian" so went by ter-ra(like sara) but my mom would always call me thar-ra in public (the way they say it in india) so i guess people couldnt figure out which was the right way to say it and so to each his own. i think when i go to college i will ask everyone to call me ta-rah(the same way they say it in the movie GWTW)

Tara Marks: I was named Tara after my mothers childhood dance teachers daughter was named Tara, and form Tara on All My Children. I love my name because it is so different. Many people call me Princess Tara or Tarabelle or Terrible Tara. Its funny. I love my name and I hope I find a unique name to name my daughter one day.

Tara O'Connor: ok.. my mom's a little insane, but she named me tara. Because she had a dream of a girl walking naked through the jungle and with big wet leaves dripping really big raindrops on her.. and thats the name that went along with it.. (i told you she was nuts!!!)

My names Tara Ottena. My mom named me Tara because her name is Tamara. So she took Ma out of it and came up with Tara.

Tara L. Johnson : I was named Tara because of my Irish heritage. I was not named after Gone With The Wind. I am named after a rocky pinnacle(thats what it means in Irish). Although it is a little uncommon, I find it to be a very pretty name........:o)

Tara Olson from Richmond, VA (USA): My parents named me Tara because they just thought it was a very beautiful and original name!(Even thoe I've always hated the name Tara.) You've showed me that I should be proud of it,because it is a beautiful and original name!

Tara Angela Leidal : I was named Tara after my mom's favorite movie: Gone with the Wind. I was almost named Scarlett.

Tara Fishwick from Merseyside (England): I was amazed to see so many people with my name as I don't know no-one with the same name! My parents found my name in a book of names and liked it because they found it's meaning to be 'princess', and I was therefore their little princess!     My name is pronounced Tar-a and I have no middle name - luckily I think! Something I always remember about my name is that as a young child I often went on holiday to Spain as my grandparents lived there, and on the side of all the lorries it said Tara - I thought I must be very special because of this, but Tara in Spanish means weight and was simply telling the weight of the lorry!

Tara Ashely DiMarco from the USA: I was named after "GONE WITH THE WIND" the two things scarlett loved Tara the house and Ashely her lover the movie took place in georgia where I was born - also tara means earth I love my name and have accually threatened to kill others with my name, but all of you seem to appreciate it just as I do much love and PE@CE___

Tara Holt: My parents chose my name as it suited my young character. I am both beautiful and mischievous.

Tara Cooper from Tennessee (USA): My name was given to me by my father, George. He chose the name, Tara, because it has no known nickname. When my father was small, he was called "Georgie", which he hated immensely!!! So that is how I got my name. Everyone asks if it was from Gone With The Wind or from the soap opera All My Children, but all I can tell you is that my father wanted me to go through life without being teased!!!!!

Tara Eneix from Ohio (USA): my mother chose my name from the soap opera "all my children". When she heard that name it sort of stuck with her. I guess she really liked it. :+)

Tara Smith: My maternal grandfather is East Indian as well as some of my mother's co-workers. At birth, I was given the beautiful name Tara, Indian for "Star" in Sanskrit; thanks to my parents and friends of our family.

Sharon C Smith from Nashville, TN (USA): My daughter's name is Tara and we got it from "Gone With The Wind" as well as it was something of an offshoot of my husband's name, Terry. The Tara/Terry thing was what made me want to go for Tara more than the movie, although I love the movie!

Gert Tara-Casciano from Little Rock (USA): My LAST name (maiden) is Tara. My grandfather came from Lvov (now in the Ukraine) at the turn of the century, he called himself an Austrian. At that time Lvov was in Austria but the boundries changed because of the two Worldwars.

Tara Zanecki from Los Angeles, CA, USA: My mother was pregnant with me while watching "The Avengers" and there was a character on for about 3 months whose name was Tara (pronounced tar-uh, not t-air-uh). Ironically, in recent years my family owned a house in Maryland where Margaret Mitchell spent her summers and was rumored to have developed the idea for her infamous story "Gone with the Wind." The name, regardless of pronunciation, has many meanings: star, earth, tower, rocky peak, cod fish, fire, and a place in Ireland. People always complement me on the name, but the pronunciation thing does get old! :)

Tara: My name was supposed to be Amanda Nicole, but my mom being a huge "soap opera" lover, liked this character named Tara, so she told the docter thats what it would be, and thats what it is. I love my name, no one else in my school has it, so when they say Tara, I know who they are talking about. The only thing I don't like, is when people call me tar(as in the road stuff)-a.

Tara: My parents named me Tara, because my mom heared Scarlett O Hara saying how much she loved Tara, the plantation, and how Scarlett said Tara would grow strong and beautiful. I am also part Irish. I love my name because I believe it is beautiful. My mom loves me like Scarlett loved her Tara.

125Tara Voogt from Amsterdam-Netherlands: My mother and father wanted to have a name for me that was special. A name that you hear not so oftenly. While I am a taurus, or torro is Spanish, they called me Tara. And I'm very happy with the name.

My name is Tara Lyn Mccusker. My mother and father named me Tara because I was born with red hair and they wanted a pretty Irish name. My father added that it was a simple but yet beautiful name, especially when it's said with an Irish accent. I am about 30% Irish however, everyone that sees me believes I am 100% Irish. It could be because I have red hair and freckles. I thank them both for giving me such a perfect and beautiful name.

My name is Tara King and I'm from Berkshire in England. I am definately not named after the Tara King on the Avengers. My mum is from Dublin and my Dad is from London. I am a twin and wasn't expected. My parents had already picked the name Jennifer (my sister's name) and when I arrived I was known as 'Baby King' for the first week of my life. My Dad came up with the idea of having one English name and one Irish name for his twin daughters, hence my name. Believe it or not my parents did not watch the Avengers and it was only later that they discovered that I shared a name with one of the characters. The name Tara means 'Towering rock' or 'Rocky' as has already been mentioned on this page. It is a hill in Ireland (Co. Meath) and was the seat of the Ancient Kings of Ireland. St. Patrick also preached there during his mission to convert Ireland to Christianity. So at the end of the day it's a pretty special name and one that I love!

My name is Tara Jenae Lowe. I think the reason why my parents named me Tara is because they had made a deal my Daddy wanted a boy so my Mom said if they have a boy he gets to name it but if they have a girl she gets to name it. Well, they had a girl so my Mom named me and she thought Tara was a really beautiful name. But even my first name is Tara everyone calls me by my middle name Jenae.

Tara Nicole Billock from Ohio-USA: The first date my parents ever went on was to see "Gone With the Wind" and after the movie they both said they thought Tara was a beautiful name for a girl, so here I am!! I've always known that in Ireland, Tara is considered to be a place of strength or a strong foundation, but just recently I discovered that Tara is a prominent diety with the Budhist and Hindu cultures! So I'm thrilled to know that if I ever get to make my dream journey to Nepal, I can hear everyone praising the Goddess Tara!! Her name means "star" and she is said to be The Great Compassionate Mother and she is the Embodiment of Wisdom!! Apparently the name is also found in many other cultures either as goddesses or as a symbol of strength! So ladies be proud to carry this name, and think for all these years most of us have thought we were named after a big house in an old movie!!

My father chose my name (tara nicole) because he liked the way it sounded. my mom agreed because she loved "gone with the wind". i never knew too many taras but i love learning about the Clan Tara and the origins of my name. In Celtic, Tara is Temair (pronounced Tau-virr) according to a former friend of mine.

Hi my name is Tara Elizabeth Miller, from Shawville, Quebec. I too was named after the movie Gone with the wind. Its a name that I wasn't fond of growing up mostly because most people called me Tera and I pronounce it Tah-ra. As an adult I have learned to like my name but still find it often gets mixed up for Sara or Terry. I once even was called Karen.

Hello! My name is Tara Malory. My parents choose this name first, because mom love the movie Gone with the wind. For me, it's the same thing. Tara... the most beautiful name in the world! Second, because my mother is Irish and in Ireland Tara is the name of an old hill where the king of Ireland come for party. Goodbye to all Tara in the world!

Tara O'Brien from California USA: My name is Tara (pronounced tar - a, not terra). My mother was German and married an American. One of her pet peeves when she moved to this country was people shortening her name. Her name was Christina, not Chris. So when I was born she wanted a name which could not be shortened. She spoke with her Obstetrician about it and he suggested Tara. He told her Tara is the Hindu star Goddess. She thought this was a beautiful name and loved the meaning behind it. I have enjoyed having an unusual name in this country, but it is quite a strage name to the Germans. In French Tara is a weight, and as many Germans speak French, this is their automatic association with my name. Needless to say they think it is a little wierd to name someone after a weight.

Tara Northridge?: My name is tara my parents named me tara after my mums friend in ireland it is an irish orgin meaning "tower" i like the name tara because it is differant than the other names.

135Another Tara O'Connor: Hello, my parents have also named me Tara. It is pronounced Tair-a not TAR-a like many people think, they always say they are pronouncing it like it is in "gone with the wind" but the pronounce is Tair- a in that too. At first i thought my name was terrible, and plain, but i learned that actually it is a beautiful name with a wonderful meaning in several religions and ethnic backgrounds. Irish : syllable girl's name of Gaelic origin, means: A hill; a rocky tower; crag. fighting tower". Buddism : the mother of Buddha / The Buddist savior goddess. Hinduism : the goddess of compassion. so i figure that this name is a powerful one that i hope now that i am worthy of having. I love it b/c so many people think its different and unique unlike the thousands of Jessica's and Tiffany's out there.

On a website about names ( http://www.babynamer.com/ ) I found this text:

This girl's and boy's name is used in Irish Gaelic, English and Hindi. Its Hindi form is derived from a Sanskrit expression meaning ''Star.'' Its European usage derives from a Gaelic place name meaning ''hill.'' The high kings of Ireland resided in a place called Tara in Meath, and it is safe to suppose that Margaret Mitchell had this in mind when she named the fictional home of Scarlett O'Hara in her 1936 novel Gone With the Wind. That book influenced the use of several names, including Ashley, and marked the creation of at least one -- Rhett. Alternate spellings of the name Tara include: Tarra, Tarrah, Tarah. There are 25 other forms of Tara. The name Tara ranked 203rd in popularity for females of all ages in a sample of the 1990 US Census.
