IN THE YEARS since I first published this checklist I have been building a collection of books designed by Jan van Krimpen. This collection now contains most of the items in the checklist as well as many books designed by him at a later date. Plans to extend the list and compile a full bibliography were suddenly revived last year, when Jason Dewinetz, owner of the Greenboathouse Press in Canada, approached me with plans for a book on Van Krimpen's work.

After a couple of mails, we decided to compile a full, detailed bibliography of all books designed by Van Krimpen throughout his career. The book, which is scheduled to be published in 2013, will be the first book to be printed in a digital revival of Van Krimpen's typeface Romanée created by Jason Dewinetz, while the introductory chapters will be hand-set in original foundry Romanée type. In addition to a detailed bibliography of books completely designed by Van Krimpen the bibliography will also contain a checklist of Van Krimpen's other typogaphic output: Books and periodicals to which he contributed bindings, titles, dust wrappers, etc.

Greenboathouse Press

OVER THE LAST couple of years many books and articles have been published on the work of Jan van Krimpen. There have been exhibitions in The Hague and Amsterdam and even in New York. However collectors and students of Van Krimpen's achievement as a designer & typographer have so far been waiting in vain for a summary of his work. Because of Van Krimpen's activities as a designer of bindings, title pages, postage stamps, publisher's marks & typefaces commissioned by over a dozen publishers, compiling a fairly complete list of his work is almost impossible. However, a lot of information is now available in checklists of publishers for whom Van Krimpen worked in the early years of his career.

The first version of the following preliminary checklist was compiled at the end of December 1996 in just over one week. I worked from published sources, antiquarian booksellers' catalogues & the online catalogue of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague. The result is bound to be incomplete and may well contain a considerable number of inaccuracies. The checklist was placed on the Internet to put the Web to the test: if the thing is worth anything it should provide a valuable medium for gathering information on the work of an artist such as Jan van Krimpen. In the past two years I have received some interesting comments and additions, but these were few and far between. Perhaps the Internet has not yet realised its full potential...

This checklist only contains work from the period 1912-1930. In On Devising and Designing Type (1957) Van Krimpen refers to these years as his early period. By 1930 he had developed his own style and he had won international acclaim. Partly due to the international economic crisis the days for limited editions and private presses were over. Also he was no longer in close contact with the literary circle of Jan Greshoff and the publisher Alexandre Stols. The thirties and forties are surely the most important years in Van Krimpen's career, but the early years are probably more interesting to collectors.

The items in this list have been arranged by year. For each year there are two sections: Designs and Books. Under Designs I have listed items that were not made for a specific book, i.e. type designs, publisher's and printer's marks, book plates, stamps etc. It is very difficult to put a date on such items (book plates in particular) & for some I have just picked a year that seemed appropriate. The Books section lists books completely designed by Van Krimpen (marked with an *) followed by books for which Van Krimpen designed a binding, title page or dust wrapper. It also includes brochures for serial publications, such as Palladium, as well as type specimen. Within sections items are listed in random order.

Books published by Hijman, Stenfert Kroese & Van der Zande are considered to be printed under supervision of Van Krimpen (with the exception of books printed by Boosten & Stols). The same goes for books printed at Joh. Enschedé from 1926 onward. Sometimes the publisher or one of his associates is credited with the typographical design in the colophon of a book printed at Joh. Enschedé. This can only mean that this person was in some way involved in the design, but because of the nature of the process of composing and printing a book, it is rather unlikely that this involvement went beyond a general outline of what the book should look like. Perhaps the text of the colophon should only be looked upon as part of the printing commission. Although Van Krimpen considered such matters completely irrelevant, an occasional quarrel over the credits for a typographical design may be found in his correspondence.

Items for which the contribution of Van Krimpen is uncertain, are marked with a (?).

Comments and additions are very welcome.
