Historical error in Union Jack!
The Union Jack (or Union Flag), the famous flag of
the United Kingdom, is based on a serious mistake. I will
demonstrate this clearly on this page. Your reaction

Geschiedenis/History
De Union Jack is ontstaan uit drie oudere vlaggen die
in de loop der jaren samengevoegd zijn. De informatie die
ik hieronder citeer is afkomstig van de officiele
website van het Britse koningshuis. De illustraties

St. George
|
|
|
Het kruis van St.
George, patroonheilige van Engeland sinds 1270 - een rood
kruis op een witte achtergrond. Dit was de nationale vlag
van Engeland totdat James I in 1603 de troon besteeg. In
1606 werd de vlag gecombineerd met:
The cross of St George: patron saint of England since
the 1270's - a red cross on a white ground. It was the
national flag of England until James I succeeded to the
throne in 1603, after which it was combined in 1606 with:

St. Andrew
|
|
|
Het Andreaskruis, een
wit diagonaal kruis op een blauwe achtergrond. Andreas is
de patroonheilige van Schotland.

St. Patrick
|
|
|
Het kruis van St.
Patrick, patroonheilige van Ierland - een diagonaal rood
kruis op een witte achtergrond. Deze vlag werd
gecombineerd met de eerste twee vlaggen na de het
unieverdrag van Ierland, Engeland en Schotland in 1801.
De vlag die toen ontstond is de huidige Union Flag.

Ireland - a diagonal red cross on a white ground. This
was combined with the previous Union Flag of St George
and St Andrew, after the Act of Union of Ireland with
England (and Wales) and Scotland on 1 January 1801, to
create the Union Flag that has been flown ever since.

The Welsh dragon

De draak op de vlag van
Wales komt niet voor op de Union Jack omdat Wales al
eerder verenigd was met Engeland.
The Welsh dragon does not appear on the Union Flag.
This is because when the first Union Flag was created in
1606, the Principality of Wales by that time was already
united with England and was no longer a separate
principality.

dage wappert in alle delen van het Verenigd Koninkrijk en
in andere landen.

In andere vlaggen, zoals die van Australie,
Nieuw-Zeeland, Fiji en Hong Kong, komt de Union Jack
voor. Op deze vlaggen wordt dezelfde fout steeds opnieuw
herhaald!

New-Zealand, Fiji and Hong Kong, the Union Jack is also
present. On these flags, the same mistake is repeated
over and over again!

Bij het combineren van de drie vlaggen is een fout
gemaakt die tot op de dag van vandaag te zien is in de
beroemde vlag.
In combining the three flags, a mistake was made
which still can be observed.

Rechte lijnen/Straight

De vlag van St. Patrick
is een rood, diagonaal kruis. Het kruis bestaat uit twee
rechte lijnen die elkaar in het midden snijden..
The flag of St. Patrick is a red, diagonal cross. The
cross consists of two straight lines which intersect in
the middle.

Verschoven lijnen/Shifted

Zoals je kunt zien zijn
deze twee lijnen in de moderne Union Jack verschoven! Dit
is de Grote Union Jack Mistake!
As you can see, in the modern Union Jack these two
red lines have shifted! This is The Great Union Jack
Mistake!

De oplossing/The solution
|

|
De oplossing is eigenlijk simpel: verbreed de
rode lijnen, zodat ze weer tegenover elkaar liggen. Het
originele kruis van St. Patrick is dan weer duidelijk te
herkennen!
The solution is quite simple: broaden the red lines.
In this way, the original St. Patrick cross becomes
visible again!
