Thursday, 26th of August 1999: Reykjavík - Thingvellir - AkureyriHere at "Thingvellir", on the northern shore of the lake "Thingvallavatn", in the year 930 A.D., Danish and Norwegian immigrants founded a parliament. Today this parliament, called the "Althing", is the oldest parliament in the world. Every year thousands of Icelandic inhabitants visit this place to celebrate Iceland's National Day, at June the 17th. Geologically "Thingvellir" is very interesting because this is the plate boundary where the Eurasian Plate and the American Plate start to drift away from each other. The picture is taken standing on the edge of the American Plate. In the distance you see the Eurasian Plate.
