LESSONS IN
DARBOUKA (ARABIC PERCUSSION)
by Abed Halabi
in Heerhugowaard and Hoorn (the Netherlands)

THE DARBOUKA
The darbouka is a vase-shaped hand-drum. It is the most important Arabic percussion
instrument and it is used in the whole Arab world, in classical as well as modern music.
The instrument can also play an import role in Western, Central- and South-American and
African music. The darbouka used to be made of wood, covered with the skin of a
fish, which only lives in the river Nile. Because these instruments are very sensitive to
heat and cold and because is very easily damaged, a new type of darbouka has been
developed: a metal alloy covered with an artificial skin. Abed has cooperated in the
development of this new, professional instrument. All instruments which are used
during the lessons have been supplied by the manufactory. |

THE TEACHER
The lessons are given by Abed Halabi, born in Lebanon. Already at very young age
he was attracted by rhythms. At the age of 16 he went to the conservator in Beirut. While
he was studying 'darbouka' and following singing lessons, he was asked to play in shows at
the Lebanese television. After he finished the conservator, he started to perform outside
Lebanon.
Many consider Abed as one of the best Arabic percussion players in the world.. In
Lebanon he is called "master of the darbouka". But not only with this
typical Arabic rhythm instrument, also with his voice he creates a special Arabic
atmosphere.

| THE LESSONS
The darbouka lessons are not only for people who like to try to play Arabic
(and other)
rhythms, but also for people who have always wanted to play an instrument, but not had the
opportunity. A musical background is not necessary.
During the course one learns many different rhythms, not only Arabic. Especially
dancers get more feeling for the music on which they dance.
You don't have to own a darbouka. There are always enough present during the lessons.
The darbouka can also be hired and /or bought. |
