1996

Between november 1995 and
march 1996 Mika recovered from his accident in Australia. Things settled down for McLaren. Mercedes stayed and improved the engine. Mika again got a new team mate,
but this one would stay until today: David
Coulthard.
David came over from Williams, where he had replaced Senna in 1994. At the end of
1994 he had to give his seat to Nigel Mansell. In 1995 David drove all the races for Williams alongside Damon Hill and finished 3th in the championship. Damon was second
behind Michael Schumacher. In 1996 Jacques Villeneuve, the Indycar champion of 1995, took
the second Williams seat, so David was warmly welcomed at McLaren. David proved that he's not only a good match for Mika, the team mates are
also good friends.

The last one in Marlboro-colours; a real beauty.
Mika's being fully recovered became clear in the first race of 1996 in.... Australia! He qualified and finished 5th. Mika qualified four times 4th (England, Germany, Italy and Japan). David best qualification was also 4th (San Marino and Belgium). Mika had three podium finishes (3rd in Belgium, Italy and Japan). David two (3rd in GP of Europe and 2nd in Monaco, the guys home-GP). Both drove all the races in 1996. With 31 points Mika ended as number 5 in the championship behind the three (future) champions : Hill (Williams-Renault), Villeneuve (Williams-Renault) and Schumacher (Ferrari).
