All current 443 municipalities in The Netherlands

Who clicks on the municipalities table, is going to download a file that includes all 443 Dutch municipalities (‘townships’ or ‘urban and rural districts’). Local-governmental reorganizations and changes of municipalities' names of January 1, 2007 (and all the previous changes) have been taken into account. This municipalities table also provides you with the number of inhabitants for each municipality and it mentions the province in which each of the municipalities is situated. For each municipality, you will also find a link to the web page regarding the digital version of the State Year Book (web-site of the State Year Book on www.sdu.nl/staatscourant/scdata/gemoverzicht.htm), with more administrative details for all those municipalities.

A decree by the minucipality underlies the determination of a (new) name for a municipality. Such a decree wordt ter kennis gebracht to the Minister of Home Affairs en aan het provinciebestuur. Het raadsbesluit vermeldt de datum van ingang, die is gelegen ten minste één jaar na de datum van het besluit.
A change of name may come into effect during the year, so not necessarily only on January 1.

Toelichting:
Tot 1984 bestond er geen regel of voorschrift; gemeentenamen hadden geen wettelijke basis, en hoe ze moesten worden gewijzigd is – blijkens diverse artikelen – lang een bron van verwarring geweest. In 1984 kwam de wet ‘Algemene regelen gemeentelijke indeling’ (wet-Argi), Stb. 1984-475. In die wet kreeg de gemeenteraad van een geherindeelde gemeente de expliciete bevoegdheid om de gemeentenaam, zoals die in de herindelingswet was vastgelegd, te veranderen (art. 53). Deze bepaling ging in 1991 mee over naar de wet ‘Algemene regelen herindeling’ (wet-Arhi), Stb. 1991-317 (art. 93). De bevoegdheid tot naamswijziging is in de herziene Gemeentewet van 1994 uitgebreid tot een algemene, niet aan herindeling gekoppelde bevoegdheid (art. 158). Diezelfde beveoegdheid is ook aan de provincies gegeven (Provinciewet, art. 156). Art. 93 uit de wet-Arhi verviel toen ook.
