MUF and Sporadic E

Sporadic "E"... this mainly occurs during the summer months in each hemisphere, however there are "spil-overs". The full cause of Sporadic "E" is not yet proved, many theories exist which include high altitude wind shearing, meteor activity, thunderstorms and of course the Sun. Many people's opinions relate to the Suns activity, as, this is the only common denominator, which changes between northern and southern hemispheres each year. Whatever the cause it gives the amateur chance to work vast distances on the VHF bands. MUF's (Maximum Usable Frequencies) have reached nearly to the UHF bands and produced openings as high as 220MHz. 50Mhz is frequently open during summer months for hours on end, during high intensity events multi/chordal "E" skips are common, (2/3/4 clouds align or tilt) and, produce contacts up to nearly 10,000 kilometres. Although sporadic "E" is usually a daytime event openings have been monitored through darkness hours, but the multi skip events seem to favour one of the stations being in the daylight.
