Discontinued in 1971.
Lens can be identified from its predesor by
observing where the "IR" mark is. If it is inside 4, it is the
original 8 element design if it is outside the 4, it is the later 7
element design.
The later design was not modified other than SMC
coatings up through the SMC Pentax 50mm f1.4.
The use of a rare earth element in the rear
groups cause yellowing over time in the later versions. This
yellowing can be bleached out by exposing the elements to UV in the
form of sunlight orUV lamp for weeks.

The Oreston / Pentacon 50/1.8 is arguably the
most successful Meyer offering. Being manufactured well into the
late 80's, and was first manufactured for the Exakta RTL-1000 in an
auto mount, and later in M42, M42 Electric, and later in Praktica B
mount. This lens enjoy several charismatic properety, notably it
can focus right down to 0.33 m , good enough for most close up;
lesser known is the fact that the lens is almost a perfect
symmetrical design and was a very faithful to the original Zeiss
double Gauss Planar design ( with thich cemented center groups )
making it a very usable lens for reverse mount and bellow work. In
fact it was remarked by many experienced in this lens that it seems
to perform excellency in the macro / close up range.

A good quality lens, but it can give a
puple/magenta tint to pictures taken with it,...Probably caused by
internal reflections?
Its easy to focus and the aperture ring is easy
to use.

It should be noted that the Auto M42 Pentacon
135/2.8 had a redesigned & recomputed optical formula which is
developed from the original 135/2.8. Although both are of Triplet /
Sonnar deriative of 5 elements in 3 groups design.

All technical data below is from the actual
Vivitar Owner's Manual for this lens, dated October 1975:
Elements/Groups: 5/4
Angle of Acceptance: 12 degrees
Weight: 21 oz. (595gms)
Max Barrel Diameter: 2 11/16" (68mm)
Slip on Lens Cap Size: 68mm
Produced in Japan, this large 200mm telephoto
lens is weighty and well-constructed, and fairly fast for a long
lens. It has a pull-out lens shade built in, which is nice to have
when you have a large front element like this. Besides the sturdy
construction, the 8 aperture blades are slightly curved, making the
aperture more circular, which results in pleasing bokeh areas. The
A- M switch puts it in Auto aperture or Manual (stop- down) mode as
usual. The lens is about 15cm long when fully extended (not
counting the pull out hood), about 12cm at its shortest. It
measures 22cm around (measuring around the rubber barrel grip).
Minimum focusing distance is 6 feet (183cm).
|
|
The aperture is infinitely variable - the ring
has no click- stops. The actual minimum focus distance is about
220cm, 250cm is the last number printed on the focus ring. This
lens was also sold under the Pentacon brand. There are similar
200mm and 300mm Meyer lenses for Pentacon/Kiev medium format,
The lens has a pre-set diaphragm , so it will not
need click-stops.
The camera mount is changeable, there exist,
beside the M42 adapter, a Praktina and an Exakta adapter.
This Meyer Orestegor/Pentacon lens is very
sharp.
