With the Videogrammi set, a signed and numbered “illy collection” set was produced by
Mitterteich for the first time. The, in 1932 in Korea born, American Nam June Paik incorporates art
and technology. As a composer, performer, and video artist he played a pivotal role
in introducing artists and audiences to the possibilities of using video for artistic
expression. And that’s how he decorated the six “illy collection” espresso cups…as if
they were television screens.
During studies at the Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt in 1958, he met
John Cage. Cage's ideas on composition and performance were a great influence on
Paik. In 1959 Paik performed his composition Hommage a John Cage: Music for Tape
Recorder and Piano. This performance combined a pre-recorded collage of music and
sounds with “on stage” sound created by people, a live hen, a motorcycle, and
various objects. With the face of John cage on one of the cups he brings another
homage to this composer. |
