DESIGN
The AG36 is a single shot under barrel grenade
launcher. It is designed to be used with
the G36 and G36K, but can also be attached
to the M16 and its variants. The AG36 uses
the 40x46mm low velocity rounds. The AG36
has some advantages over the HK 79. It is
a lot lighter, due to the use of polymer,
and it has a better sighting system. The
version which is fitted to the G36 is fitted
to a forearm with more openings for better
cooling. On top of the forearms is the ladder
sight. Even the version when fitted with
a forearm is lighter than the HK79. The version
which is fitted to the M16 series is mounted
below the forearm and has the sighting system
on the right side, next to the forearm. |
| There is only one version. ‘AG’ stands for
‘Anbaugranatwerfer’, or ‘attachable grenade
launcher’. |
PERFORMANCE
The AG36 has roughly the same performance
as the HK79 and M203 and the user-friendliness
of the GP-25. The barrel opens sideways to
make reloading easier and quicker. The main
advantage of the AG36 is its weight, or the
lack of it. The AG36 is the first under barrel
grenade launcher which does not increase
the weight of the entire package too much.
The AG36 is also more accurate than all other
under barrel grenade launchers, due to its
good ladder sight, which is very useful for
distance estimating. Better range estimates
increases the effectiveness of the weapon.
Its effective range is not further because
of the effects of the wind.
USE
- Used by Germany on G36 and G36K.
- Spain uses the AG36 on G36E and possibly
on G36KE.
- The Netherlands chose the AG36 over the
M203. It is mounted on the C7 (M16) and C8
(M4).
