DESIGN
The SPAS-12 was designed to be a military
shotgun. The difference between a hunting
shotgun and a police shotgun is very clear,
but what's the difference between a police
and military shotgun? A military shotgun
is robust shotgun with a forearm that doesn't
get to hot to hold the weapon, therefore
it is a lot heavier than a police shotgun.
SPAS stands for Sporting Purpose Automatic
Shotgun. Yes, it really is ‘Sporting’ not
‘Special’. The SPAS-12 is a dual mode shotgun.
Buckshot, flechettes or slugs are fired semi-automatic
or pump-action, while low-pressure cartridges
are fired in pump-action mode only. It was
developed in the late seventies. |
| There are no real variants of the SPAS-12.
The only thing that can be different
is the
clip size, color or stock. |
| The SPAS-12 with fixed stock is not seen
very often. |
PERFORMANCE
The SPAS-12 is one of the best combat shotguns.
It's just as effective as the Benelli Super
90 combat shotguns, but the SPAS-12 carries
more rounds. Just like the Benelli's, the
pistol grip allows to fire the weapon with
one hand. The foldable stock version even
has a ring at the end of the folding stock
to make it easy to hold with one hand. There
is only one problem with the SPAS-12. Reloading
has to be done one shell at a time. The magazine-fed
SPAS-15 solves this problem.
USE
- The SPAS-12 is used by many law enforcement
and anti-terrorist squads. Well known users
are: Dutch BBE and German SEK.
