Box Scores Holland Series Baseball
Neptunus starts with victory
BUSSUM - Neptunus opened the 1999 Holland Series with a 12-10 victory vs. reigning champion HCAW and got two unlikely offensive heroes in Eddie Dix and Ron Agterberg.
Three Neptunus-pitchers gave up fifteen hits, including two homeruns by Lars Koehorst, but the team never relinquished its lead after the fourth inning. Neptunus took an early 2-0 lead after scoring in the second and third, but the first homerun by Koehorst tied the game in the bottom third. Neptunus then quickly retook the lead as Eddie Dix hit a two-run homerun, which was only his second of the season and first ever in Holland Series-play. Neptunus then rallied for five runs in the fifth as HCAW-starter Patrick de Lange got himself into problems. Three consecutive one-out singles led to a run, then he walked the next batter, before facing Ron Agterberg, who hit a grand slam homerun. Like Dix, it was only his second homerun of the season and his first in post-season competition.. While HCAW scored three of its own in the fifth, Neptunus added three more in the sixth, as Johnny Balentina hit a two-run double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple on a throw. Veteran Marcel Kruyt followed with a homerun. HCAW never gave up and scored twice in the sixth and added three more in the eighth. Koehorst hit his second homerun of the game and after American John Hrusovsky came on in relief, Clive Mendes also connected for a fourbagger. In the ninth, Hrusovsky struckout two and retired the side, earning his third post-season save.

HCAW shuts out Neptunus
ROTTERDAM - HCAW tied the best-of-five Holland Series by shutting out Neptunus 4-0 in Game Two on Sunday. A pitching duel between Jurriaan Lobbezoo (HCAW) and Ken Brauckmiller (Neptunus) resulted in a scoreless tie after eight innings. Finally, in the eighth, HCAW connected on Brauckmiller as Ronald Jaarsma led off with a single. After Lars Koehorst struckout, Jeffrey Cranston doubled in Jaarsma and scorde himself on a single by Clive Mendes. Brauckmiller then got Gino Arrindell hitting into a force play, but walked Jurjan Koenen, before being relieved by Micha Klooswijk. The new pitcher walked Glenn Romney, then gave up a two-run single to Nick Fridsma to make it 4-0. Lobbezoo pitched a two-hitter and didn't allow a runner on second base. He struckout six. Both teams meet in Game Three on Monday-evening at Rotterdam.

NEPTUNUS DUTCH CHAMPION
ROTTERDAM - Neptunus celebrated its fifth title and first since 1995 on Sunday, after defeating HCAW 7-2 in Game Four and winning the Holland Series, 3-1, dethroning HCAW. Again, the rain played an important part as the start of the game was delayed and play was interrupted five times for a total of more than one hour because of rain and hail. It was HCAW who opened the scoring in the third, after Nick Fridsma singled, moved to third on a single by Michael Duursma and scored on a grounder by Ronald Jaarsma. But in the home third, HCAW-ace Jurriaan Lobbezoo was hit hard. He gave up five hits, leading to four runs. With the bases load, Robert Eenhoorn hit a baseclearing double, then scored himself on a double by Johnny Balentina. In the seventh, Neptunus added two runs on a two-run double by Balentina. HCAW couldn't get through on pitcher Ken Brauckmiller, who got the starting assignment over ace Rob Cordemans, who was assigned to an eventual Game Five. In the eighth, HCAW scored its second run on a double by Duursma, but Neptunus took the run back right away. In the home eighth, Percy Isenia hit a homerun to make it 7-2. The game marked the end of the active careers of HCAW-first baseman Roy Berrevoets and Neptunus players Bob van Aalen (2nd base), Geoffry Kohl (pitcher) and Wim Martinus (utility), who all announced their retirement. Marcel Kruyt, who also played with the thought of retiring, announced he will be back for another season.
