Marcel Joost hits 1000th career basehit!

Marcel Joost on Saturday, May 15, 1999 became the first player in Dutch baseball history to collect his 1000th career basehit. The veteran of Kinheim accomplished the feat in the bottom of the first inning, when he lined a 1-0 pitch of Twins pitcher Daan Castien through the infield. The hit highlighted a ten-run first inning by Kinheim, which won the game 13-3.

After Daniel de Haan singled and was sacrificed to second, Giel ten Bosch homered and Raymond Hofer walked, setting the scene for Joost's historic hit. After Joost connected, the game was stopped by the umpiring crew, as Joost was honored by Theo Reitsma, the President of the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association, Frits Huizinga, the Vice-President of Kinheim, and Ger Janssen, the head coach of opponent Twins. After being congratulated by his teammates and coaches, the game continued as a wild first inning unfolded. After Joost's hit, Cees Lammerts reached base on an error, then Jeffrey Verbij hit a grand slam homerun, before Coen Lammerts grounded out. Toine Jager and Daniel de Haan followed with back-to-back homeruns, marking the end of Twins-starter Castien. His reliever Arny Fernandes gave up a hit to Paul Morel and then Giel ten Bosch tied a record by hitting his second homerun of the inning, before Hofer was the final out of the inning, grounding to the short stop. In the inning eleven batters came to the plate, ten runs were scored, and eight hits were registered, including five homeruns.

In the second inning, Marcel Joost had a lead-off double, his 1001st career hit. He finished the game going 2-for-4. Later, in the sixth, Ten Bosch hit his third homerun of the game and Verbij hit his second to end the game in the seventh because of the ten-run-difference-rule.
For Twins, Serge Artsen homered in the fourth.

The 38-year old Marcel Joost is in his twentieth season in the Dutch big leagues and holds numerous league and all-time records, including games played, runs scored, RBI's, hits, doubles, triples, homeruns and batting average. He also played the most games (153) for the Dutch national team, including participations in the Olympic Games in Seoul (1988) and Atlanta (1996).

Joost started his career with the Amsterdam Pirates (now called Amsterdam Expos). After the 1978 season he moved to Haarlem Nicols, with whom he made his debut in 1979 and also debuted in the Dutch Major League. Joost played thirteen seasons for Haarlem Nicols, with the excemption of the 1989 season. Earlier that year he announced his retirement, but came out of it a year later to start a comeback and continued to play for another ten seasons since then. In 1993 Joost went from Nicols to another Haarlem-club, Kinheim, with whom he's playing now seventh season.

In 1988, Joost reached the 500-hit mark, when he singled off American Sparta-pitcher Jim Hovorka, who's now the pitching coach of the Dutch national baseball-team. Two years ago, on May 10, Joost connected for basehit number 900 off Erik Lommerde, who then played for Hoofddorp Pioniers.

Neptunus Dutch champion
ROTTERDAM - Neptunus celebrated its fifth title and first since 1995 on Sunday, after defeating HCAW 7-2 in Game Four and winning the Holland Series, 3-1, dethroning HCAW. Again, the rain played an important part as the start of the game was delayed and play was interrupted five times for a total of more than one hour because of rain and hail. It was HCAW who opened the scoring in the third, after Nick Fridsma singled, moved to third on a single by Michael Duursma and scored on a grounder by Ronald Jaarsma. But in the home third, HCAW-ace Jurriaan Lobbezoo was hit hard. He gave up five hits, leading to four runs. With the bases load, Robert Eenhoorn hit a baseclearing double, then scored himself on a double by Johnny Balentina. In the seventh, Neptunus added two runs on a two-run double by Balentina. HCAW couldn't get through on pitcher Ken Brauckmiller, who got the starting assignment over ace Rob Cordemans, who was assigned to an eventual Game Five. In the eighth, HCAW scored its second run on a double by Duursma, but Neptunus took the run back right away. In the home eighth, Percy Isenia hit a homerun to make it 7-2. The game marked the end of the active careers of HCAW-first baseman Roy Berrevoets and Neptunus players Bob van Aalen (2nd base), Geoffry Kohl (pitcher) and Wim Martinus (utility), who all announced their retirement. Marcel Kruyt, who also played with the thought of retiring, announced he will be back for another season.

USA: Major League World Series
New York Yankees claim 25th World Series title after completing sweep
NEW YORK (USA) - The New York Yankees once again proved why they are the 'Team of the Century'. On Wednesday-evening, the Yanks won 4-1 vs. the Atlanta Braves, completing a four-game sweep and also becoming the 'Team of the Decade'.
It was a night with mixed emotions. Especially for Yankee-rightfielder Paul O'Neill, who's father passed away the night before. And for back-up infielder Luis Sojo, who's father died last week. And for third baseman Scott Brosius, who's father passed away last month. There was an emotional celebration after the game, with manager Joe Torre also having tears in his eyes. Three years ago, his brother was in the hospital during the World Series. Last year, outfielder Darryl Strawberry missed the Series after being diagnozed with cancer.
And then there was Yankee-starter Roger Clemens winning his first World Series-ring in his 16th year career. Before entering the field in the first inning, Clemens touched the memorial of Yankee great Babe Ruth in the leftfield Momument park. It helped, as Clemens allowed only two hits in seven innings. Clemens' opponent John Smoltz struckout eleven, but also gave up three runs in the third inning. Chuck Knoblauch and Derek Jeter led off with hits, giving Jeter a 17-game postseason hitting streak, tying a record. Tino Martinez then hit a two-run infield-single, just out of reach of first baseman Ryan Klesko. Moments later, Jorge Posada hit an RBI-single, making it 3-0. In the eighth, the Braves finally touched Clemens, scoring their first run on an RBI-single by Bret Boone. But in the bottom eighth, it was pinch-hitter Jim Leyritz hitting his eighth post-season homerun, making it 4-1. In the ninth Mariano Rivera retired the side, and won the Most Valuable Player Award. The last game of the century was history.

Dutch national baseball-team manager Jan Dick Leurs (left) was named Coach of the Year for a record fifth time.
Leurs won the award for the great successes of the Dutch team last summer. In Rotterdam, the national team won the World Port Tournament, and later they captured the European Championship in Italy and also qualified for next years Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
In 1993 Leurs, who's national team manager since 1992, won the award for guiding the Dutch squad to the European title in Sweden.
In 1981, 1982 and 1988 he won the award for leading the clubteam of Haarlem Nicols to the Dutch championship. The Coach of the Year Award was first presented in 1968.

Leo Buiteman (right) was named Softball Coach of the Year. It was the second time a coach award was presented to softball coaches.
In 1999, Buiteman was active as head coach of Schiedam in the First Division.
Buiteman, who also served as manager and coach of the national junior softball team for a few years, guided Schiedam to the First Division championship leading to promotion. With that result, Schiedam will return to the Dutch big league next year, after a long absence.

Bill Arce (left) was awarded the Leen Volkerijk Award. The award is presented annually to persons, who have made big contributions to the development and education of the game in The Netherlands and is named after former club and national team coach Leen Volkerijk, who passed away in 1993 and was a frontrunner in the development-area.
Arce got the award for his long contribution in this field for more than thirty years. Arce, who was the Dutch national team manager in 1963 and 1971, conducted a lot of clinics over the years and is an annual visitor to international events. For the last sixteen years he has made a major contribution in the organization of the annual European Baseball and Softball Clinics in The Netherlands.

The first Nol Houtkamp Award was presented to Bram van der Werf (right), who served as pitching coach for all national softball-teams over the years since the seventees.
Van der Werf is still active as a pitching instructor for national youth teams as well as the clubteam of Terrasvogels, which is the most succesful Dutch softball-team and this year again won the Dutch championship.
