Descendents of Matthew Trevan (1732-1786) and Elizabeth nee Stephens (1728-1783) who Migrated to North East Cornwall

Matthew was the first child of John and Francis (the first generation where the name Trevan was used) to migrate from Cornwall into Devon. He was in Stoke Damerel by 1757 and later became a Yeoman with property in Eggbuckland, which is now a suburb of modern day Plymouth, and he married twice; firstly to Elizabeth Stephens who was also from St. Germans, and secondly to Catherine Hosegood who was from Stoke Damerel. Judging from where his family were baptised, married and buried, he moved between the different parishes in which he rented (and owned) properties. His first daughter, Elizabeth, was buried at St. Teath and a few months later daughter Betsy Alicia was baptised there.

Matthew and Elizabeth had 6 children who survived into adulthood and at least 3 of them returned to Cornwall, but this time to parishes in the north east.

Possibly this is the area where their Treveighen ancestors lived before John Treveighen moved to the parish of Antony in SE Cornwall, but this link has not yet been proved.

This page holds the details found in the parishes in North East Cornwall.

On a headstone outside of the church reads "Sacred to the memory of Mattw Trevan, late of Pengelly in this parish, who left this world in full hope of a blessed Eternity, August the 2d 1809 aged 46". His widow Ann was buried in St. Mabyn.

Although not proven, it is possible that John Trevans of Medrose who was buried age 46 in 1842 was the illegitimate son of John Trevan by Ann Clinnick of Sheviock before he married Christiana in 1799.

Port Isaac in the Parish of St. Endellion

Registration District: Bodmin - Map | CFHS description | Port Isaac - Tourist Information | Photos of Port Isaac - slow to load but I think it's worth the wait!

Port Isaac was part of the parish of St. Endellion until it was made a separate parish in 1913.

John Archer Trevan and Ann nee Watts had a family of 10 children and only one, Isaac, permanently left the area becoming a Customs Officer and living at Looe in south east Cornwall. The remainder of the family are buried in the Trevan burial area in the churchyard at St. Endellion. Inside the church there are 4 plaques to this branch of the family.

  1. centre - John Archer Trevan and wife Ann nee Watts
  2. top left - Adolphus Trevan, their unmarried son
  3. top right - Matthew and Henry Trevan, their unmarried sons
  4. bottom - Frederick Trevan and Elizabeth Moon nee Hingston , the only son to produce a further generation
It is thought that the name Trevan has died out on this branch.
