Brief Description

Not much is known of the Northcote family of St Mewan. Thomas married Loveday Werry there on 11 Feb 1837.

She was baptised on 10 Jan 1819 at St. Mewan, Cornwall, daughter of William and Jennifer Werrey nee Daw who had been married also at St Mewan on Boxing Day 1812.

He was described as a yeoman. They had at least 9 children born and baptised in the parish.

Their daughter Rachel married into the Trevan family. Rachel's great-granddaughter Alice Trevan has provided some family information for this branch and has photographs of many of Thomas and Loveday's children.

Notes:

  1. Until 1846 the children appear to have been baptised as infants. Then there was a gap and 3 children were baptised in 1853. Does this mean the family left the parish and returned in 1853? Or that there was a new vicar who they didn't get on with and waited until he was replaced? Did they go methodist for a while? 1851 census would be very useful place to look to answer the question of where they lived.
  2. Thomas senior has died before the 1871 census
  3. I could not find the following children in the 1881 census and a first name, year and place of birth search, so presumably they had died or left the county.
  4. Using the year of baptism and place of birth the other children have potentially been found from the 1881 cenus - however these marriages are assumptions which need to be confirmed by locating either the marriage record in the church records (research at Truro Record Office) or from the Civil Registration Index (research at Myddelton St, London)

Mary Jane Moses nee Northcote (c1839- after 1881)

Mary Jane was baptised on Christmas day in 1839 at St Mewan. Not much is known about her, but from searching through the 1881 census records for women born in St Mewan called Mary Jane, 3 possible entries were found, of which the most promising looks to be that she married Robert Moses, a lead miner who was born in Tregony. With her married name the 1871 census was also searched.

Her most likely family is
Husband: Robert Moses (c1836/7-)
Their known children:

  1. Elizabeth Mary Moses (c1860/1-) born at St Mewan who became a tailoress
  2. Thomas Moses (c1862/3-) born at St Mewan
  3. Robert Moses (c1864/5-) born at St Mewan who became a tailor
Possibly Elizabeth and Robert were influenced in their choice of trade by their aunt Caroline who was also a tailoress.

Ellen Lord nee Northcote (c1845- after 1896)

Ellen was baptised on 13 Apr 1845 at St Mewan. Her great-niece has photos of her, one annotated 'Ellen' when she looks to be in her 20s and another 'Aunt Lord about 1896'.

At the time of the 1871 census Ellen was in service to Dr Matthews in St Austell as a housemaid. Another servant was Joshua Th Lord, a groom. His full name is Joshua Thomas Harris Lord, baptised 16 Feb 1851 at Mevagissey, son of Joshua Lord and Jane Williams Harris, who married on 25 Mar 1850 also at Mevagissey.

By the time of the 1881 census she had married and moved to the South Hams area of Devon, but her husband was not living with the family on the night of the census. Presumably she married Joshua, since on the census night he is shown as one of the many servants in the household of the Samuelson family. Mr Samuelson was absent but was a Member of Parliament. His wife, 2 daughters and 1 son were at home with 2 visitors (Gertrude York Wright age 17 from Canada and Commander Arthur Stephen Philpotts R.N.). 11 servants were living in that night at the Samuelson residence at Lupton House, Brixham, Devon.

Her known children:

  1. William Thomas Harris Lord (c1873/4-) born in St Austell, baptised 4 Jan 1874 at St Austell
  2. Joshua T T Lord (c1877/8-) born in St Austell

Loveday Emma Osborne? nee Northcote (c1851/2 - after 1881)

Loveday Emma Northcote was baptised on 20 Jan 1853 at St Mewan. She was the first of 3 sisters to be baptised that year. However, the 3rd sister was Rachel, and from census information it appears that Rachel was actually born in 1848. In the 1871 census Emma was recorded as age 19, and 30 in the 1881.

Emma was single and recorded in the 1871 census as a servant. Note there is also an Emma Northcote of St Austell. By the 1881 census it appears she is married to David Osborne.

Their known child:

  1. Male infant (not named in the 1881 census) born Feb / Mar 1881
When the birth of the child that her sister Rachel Trevan raised as her youngest son was registered, the mother's name was recorded as Emma Trevan. This was recorded in the informant column as 'Emma Trevan, mother, Carvath, St Austell'. It seems likely that there was a mistake since Carvath is where Rachel Trevan lived. Possibly her sister Emma registered the birth for her.

Caroline Northcote (c1853 - after 1881)

Caroline Northcote was baptised on 26 Apr 1853 at St Mewan. She was the second of 3 sisters to be baptised that year and may well have been more than just a few months old at the time.

She was still living at home at the time of the 1871 census when she was shown as a 17 year old tailoress, suggesting that she was born in 1853. 10 years later she was living with her married sister Rachel and family at Carvath. On the back of a photo in an album passed down through this branch of the family there is the name 'Carrie'.

John Northcote (1855 - after 1881)

John Northcote was baptised on 28 Oct 1855 at St Mewan.

He was still living at home at the time of the 1871 census when he was shown as a 15 year old caprenters apprentice. At the time of the 1881 census he was living at Sparnon Moor with his wife Elizabeth J Northcott and child.

  1. Albert Thomas Northcott (c1878/9-) born in St Austell

Links to Sources of Information

Parish Register and Other Church Information

  1. Thomas Northcott was described as "Yeoman of Sheviock".
  2. The baptism records for all of their children were found at St Mewan.
  3. The birth certificate for Samuel Trevan gives But there is no known Emma Trevan living in Cornwall. However Rachel had a sister called Emma, so it seems more likely that this refers to her. One can only speculate whether Emma was actually the mother, or whether she went to record the birth on behalf of her sister and something went wrong in the recording process. Rachel lived at Carvath for many years, and the census information as well as other family provided information shows that Samuel was Rachel's son.
