Dear Joyce,
I was delighted to catch you while you were at your old house yesterday. I hope you'll soon be straight from the hurricane and also your move.
Neither myself nor my recently discovered 4th cousin, Chris Trevan, found any Trevan's from the headstones at Sheviock, in spite of making independent visits this year. Chris has done most of his research by visiting a couple of Trevan's in Cornwall and talking to them. His grandfather moved to the London area and worked for Burroughs-Wellcome in standardising the dosage of insullin. He was a FRS as a result of this work. Chris has returned to Cornwall and went on a course which was run by a Trevan, and this seems to have been the start of his interest in family history.
My background is that as a child I spent much of my life in Malta (1959-1963) and Cyprus (1965-1972). When we returned to England my grandfather told me some stories about his family and so I took some notes of who was related to who. In 1974, at his funeral, I met some more of the family, so I added to the notes and put them to one side.
In 1985 I moved to my current job and returned to Plymouth. In 1986 my father received a letter from Bob Trevan in Australia who was trying to research his tree and was stuck at roundabout 1800. Eventually I fished out my old notes and sent him some information I had about Richard / Jane / John / Sarah's of that vintage, and I started again on my tree which was only back to the 1850s. One thing led to another, and suddenly I was back to Sampson & Frances from a mixture of the 1851 census and the IGI. Then I started going to the West Devon Record Office, but looking at my great-grandfathers generation. Then I joined an evening class and learnt about the BTs, Marriage Allegation Bonds, Licences, Settlement Papers etc etc. From the BTs (at WDRO) I discovered the St German's connection, and discovered a branch of TREVEHENs at Landrake, descended from a REGINOLD TREVEHN of St Teath. From the St Teath BTs, his name was spelt TREVEGHAN, and there are many generations in that area from the 16th to 18th centuries.
I've also joined the Devon Family History Society, and through them learnt of John di Meo and Brenda Quintrell (4th & 5th cousins respectively!)
Overleaf I've listed the enclosures I'm sending. I would appreciate it ii you could add to this information in any way. I'd especially like the wording of Christiana's headstone and her will. I'm hoping that Brenda will send me a copy of Sampson's will, and I'll copy it to you when she does. If there's anything else on my summary sheet you'd like, just let me know and I'll send you a copy.
I'll look forward to hearing from you.
