Brief Description

Henry Meirs Trevan was born on 30 Nov 1842 at Back of Portland Place, Morice Town in Stoke Damerel. He was named after his uncle Henry Meirs who had married his father's eldest sister Christiana Trevan in Sheviock. He was not baptised until 22 Nov 1849, when the entry in the parish register for St James's at Devonport shows that he was baptised privately and that he was admitted into the church on 2 Aug 1852. His brother William Henry Trevan was also baptised and admitted into the church on the same day. By 22 Nov 1849 the family were living at 7 Moon Street, not far from the river crossing to Torpoint in the parish of Antony. During 1849, approximately 1000 peopel died of Cholera, which may have been the reason for these baptisms as children rather than as infants.

He was living at home with his parents at the time of the 1851 census and 1861 census, by which time he was a shipwright.

He married at the beginning of 1864 in Charles Church and started a family later in the same year.

Henry signed but Kezia made her mark.

Following the death of his their father in 1862 youngest brother Adolphus and their mother Honor nee Treliving probably lived with them at 2 Newport Street, East Stonehouse. In 1867 when Adolphus married this was the address he gave, and 2 of Henry's daughters were christened from the same address in 1867 and 1869. By the time of the 1871 census their sister Hannah had moved back to Plymouth from Banff where she was living during the 1860s and their mother Honor nee Treliving was living with her.

At the time of the 1871 census Henry was not at home on the night of the census. For the 1881 census he was at home and his mother-in-law and sister-in-law were living with them at 26 Frederick St, which he owned. Some of the property was occupied by the Wills family. They were at the same address for the 1891 census but by now the Wills family had left and part of the property was occuppied by the Kelly family (3 people in 1 room), the Macrin family (5 people in 2 rooms) and the Fenton family (4 people in 1 room), leaving the Trevan household of 10 people with 4 rooms. By this time his mother-in-law and sister-in-law were no longer living with them. They were still living in Plymouth at the time of the 1901 census.

This is the earliest generation on my direct Trevan line for which stories were told to me by my grandfather, because he was telling me stories about his grandparents. Earlier stories were just vaguely about "the family".

I've heard it said that oral tradition can go back for 300 years before it won't survive beyond that if it's not written down, but on my branch of the family it's not lasted that long. It's taken me 20 years from last hearing the stories to beginning to write them down now, and they relate to events which were less than 100 years old at the time of telling.

It's also the first generation for which the original birth certificates were passed down to me from within the family.

Henry Meirs Trevan was a shipwright, and by oral tradition

  1. he was working in the Devonport Dockyard, which was the traditional employer of the family
  2. he came from Cornwall
  3. he had 21 children and the family was so big they needed to live in 2 houses
My research has shown that there is some truth in these stories but that they had become corrupted in minor details
  1. Henry's father John was a carpenter and joiner but earlier generations were yeomen. Other members of the family also worked in the dockyard, but they were brothers and cousins, not generations of ancestors.
  2. it was his parents who were the generation to move "across the water" from Cornwall. He was born in Stoke Damerel and moved to the eastern suburbs of Plymouth when his parents moved. This was presumably about the time of the rift between the "C of E" and "Methodee" branches of the family. Henry's son Bill (my great-grandfather) told my grandfather of the time he was beaten by his father for playing with his cousins, just because they were methodists and he was not suppoesd to visit them!
  3. he had 12 children; his brother John William had 9 children, making 21 "Church of England" Trevan cousins who lived near to each other in Charles parish. Not all of the children survived to adulthood.

His death certificate shows that he died at home at 26 Frederick St on 5 Dec 1917 of 'senile decay'. His occupation is shown as a Pensioner HM Dockyard and the informant was his son John William Trevan, whose address was given as 12 Camden Street, Plymouth.

Kezia May nee Trevan (1867-)

Kezia was baptised at Charles Church, Plymouth on 29 Nov 1867. The family was living at 2 Newport Street in East Stonehouse but still continued to use Charles Church, which they had used for many years before they moved.

She was at home for the 1871 census and 1881 census, when she was described as a tailoress. From the Civil Registration records, she married during Jan-Mar 1888 in Stoke Damerel. This was at Pennycross church.
