Sampson Trevan was born on 28 Nov 1880 at Trenance, St Austell, Cornwall, in c1880. By oral tradition, he was a cooper at Bugle, Cornwall. At the time of the 1901 census he was living at home with his family in St Austell and he and elder brother John were both described as Clay Cask Cooker. From postcards written by John to brother Will, who had already moved to live in London before the 1901 census, work was slack in St Austell in March 1908. It seems probable that Sampson left the St Austell area for Lee Moor before he married.
He married in the Plympton registration district in the second quarter of 1906 and moved to work at Lee Moor, Devon, and lived in the Plympton area. China clay was still being mined at Lee Moor when my parents were living in Plympton in the 1970s and 80s, and the depot for the English China Clay lorries was opposite their house in Newnham Road, Colebrook, Plympton. China clay was also still being mined in the area around St Austell.
Photos of him survive and were passed down two branches of the family. His daughter Mabel married Mr Foster and provided information on the family to Joyce Banks when they met in 1978. She was also in contact with Bessie Cocking, nee Crosscombe, another Trevan relative and family historian from an earlier generation. He died 31 Jan 1924.
