William Henry Trevan (1818-1902) who married Mary Ann Wallis during 1Q1847 in the Stoke Dameral registration district
Paternal grandfather: Sampson Trevan
(1741-1795), yeoman of Sheviock
Maternal grandparents: Thomas Henwood, yeoman of St. Teath and Mary nee Brown
Illegitimate child: John Trevan son of Ann Clinnick bapt 26 Jan 1799 (or 1800; need to check the original parish register); from 27 Apr 1800 until 5 Apr 1801 the Sheviock Overseers Accounts (DDP 208/12/2) show that she received 2s 0d per week "for her bastard child". The payments were made by one of the overseers (Arthur Peters and Samuel Littleton) and the "Witness" was often John Trevan.
This couple are the 'most modern' common ancestors of all Trevan's on this tree who were living at the time of writing (16 May 2005). Like their ancestors they were yeomen / farmers. Many of Sampson's descendents became sailors and they or their descendents went overseas but a few stayed in Cornwall. Meanwhile John and Christiana's descendents mostly stayed on the land in England predominantly becoming carpenters, builders and shipwrights. Almost all of John and Christiana's descendents left Cornwall although some have since returned. There are descendents with other surnames from earlier generations through several female lines who never left the county.
John was born in St Germans where he was baptised on 8 Apr 1776. Shortly afterwards the family moved to Sheviock.
John had an illegitimate son John by Ann Clinnick shortly before marrying Christiana Henwood in St Teath by licence.
Christiana was baptised at St Teath on 24 Nov 1779, daughter of Thomas Henwood and Mary nee Brown. The witnesses at the marriage were either her brother or father, Thomas Henwood, and brother-in-law Matthew Oliver, husband to Peggy.
John acted as Church Warden and Parish Constable for the parish of Sheviock. His children were all born in the parish of Sheviock. At the time of the 1841 census John was at home in the village of Crafthole in the parish of Sheviock with son William, unmarried daughter Margaretta and married daughter Christiana Meers (aka Meirs) and granddaughter Adelaide Meers. His wife Christiana was recorded staying with their married daughter Jemima Bant in Church Town in St Teath. Christiana was buried in Sheviock in 1846 . Her headstone was still visible in the churchyard in the late 1980's after being 'excavated' by an earlier descendent of their who was researching the family (with the consent of the vicar) during the 1970s.
Following her death he moved to Torpoint in the neighbouring parish of Antony where he was living at the time of his death. He is buried in the churchyard at Sheviock.
Christiana Trevan was baptised at Sheviock on 22 Apr 1802.
According to an earlier researcher, Joyce Banks, she was born on 12 Oct 1801.
She married Henry Meirs at Sheviock 20 Aug 1822. The witnesses were John Trevan, Maria Meirs and Harriet Sarah Meirs.
Their known children
John Henry William Miers (father Carpenter's Mate,RN, of Willcove) was baptised on 5 Jun 1823 at Sheviock
Ann Henwood Meirs (c1824/5-) who was born at Wilcove, Antony, Cornwall and who married William Josiah Burt, son of Jacob Burt, in the St Germans registration district in the 3rd quarter of 1844
Christiana was living with her father at the time of the 1841 census, along with her brother William, sister Maragretta and daughter Adelaide.
At the time of the 1861 census she was with her daughter Ann.
She died in Stoke Damerel where her death was registered in the first quarter of 1872 when her age was recorded as 70.
Although it is not my directly bloodline I am very interested in the Meirs connection since it is the middle name of my great-greatgrandfather, her nephew, and he passed it on to his eldest son.
Jemima Trevan was baptised at Sheviock on 3 Aug 1809.
According to an earlier researcher, Joyce Banks, she was born on 2 Apr 1809.
She married William Bant (c1801/2-1877) of St Teath on 13 May 1836 at Sheviock Church.
The witnesses were John Keat and Mary Ann Keat.
Their known children:
John Bant (c1837/8-)
Margaretta Bant (c1839/40-)
Christiana Bant (c1841/2-)
Ann Bant (c1843/4-)
William H T Bant (c1845/6-)
Jane Bant (c1848/9- ) born in St Teath
At the time of the 1841 census her mother Christiana Trevan was staying with them in St Teath.
Although I have not seen the 1851 census information, I have been told that
William 48 was visiting his sister Mary Broad (nee Bant ) at Otterham
whilst John 13 was shown as Servant for Mary and John Broad at Otterham.
Margaretta 11 was a Visiting Relation at Sheviock.
I have also been told that in 1861 that Ann 17 and William 15 were both Servants at Otterham.
Margaretta Trevan was baptised at Sheviock on 23 Jul 1811.
According to an earlier researcher, Joyce Banks, she was born on 23 Mar 1811.
Margaretta was living with her father at the time of the 1841 census, along with her brother William, sister Christiana and niece Adelaide Meirs.
She married William Bennett on 3 Apr 1844 at Plymouth St. Andrew.
Both gave their address as Finewell St.
Ann Henwood Meirs, who married a few months later in the St Germans registration district in Cornwall, was the witness, presumably daughter to her sister Christiana Meirs nee Trevan.
Their known children:
Christiana Bennett of Polbathick was buried at Sheviock on 11 Feb 1844 age 2 weeks
Mary Henwood Trevan was baptised at Sheviock on 7 May 1813 when her father was described as a yeoman.
She was not living at home with her father at the time of the 1841 census.
She married Thomas James of Landrake some time before 1861, and it appears that they were unable to have children of their own.
At the time of the 1861 census her niece Elizabeth was living with them at 45 Fore Street, Torpoint as was her husbands sister-in-law, Mary Burt, who was already a widow at age 38(?) and whose occupation was given as a Nurse. Her husband was described as a Master Butcher and her niece Elizabeth as an Assitant Butcher.
By 1861 Elizabeth was no longer with them, but a great-niece was living with them. She was Sarah Burt, daughter of Mary's niece Ann Henwood Burt nee Meirs who in turn was daughter of Ann's eldest sister Chrisitana Meirs nee Trevan.
From information provided to me by Fred Hancock, a descendent of Henry and Frances Davey nee Trevan, they were still at Hay Farm, Sheviock at the time of the 1891 census, by which time their niece Sarah was still living with them, but was now married with children of her own.

Thomas James was buried at Sheviock on 20 Jul 1891
Mary James was buried at Sheviock on 21 Jan 1892.
By the time of the 1901 census both the Jameses were dead and buried at Sheviock, and the Williams family was no longer living at Hay Farm.
In the churchyard at Sheviock is the headstone for Christiana which reads as follows
Sacred

Christiana

John Trevan
and devoted daughter of
Thomas Henwood
of St. Teath
who was suddenly taken from Time to

In 1810 he was renting the Sheviock Barton, which is opposite the church in the village of Sheviock.
By 1841 he was farming in Crafthole, also in the parish of Sheviock. He occuppied a property owned by William Henry Pole Carew Esq which was described in the Tithe Apportionment as "House Court Loges Mowhay Barn & Garden" which occupied an area of 28 perches and for which the assessment was 10d. He also had 6 arable fields totalling 47 acres 1 perch 36 rods for which the assessment was 10 pounds 8 shillings and 1 penny. The field names were
John must have maintained contact with St. Teath as his signature
appears on one of the Henwood wills.
When John and Christiana married the witnesses were Thos Henwood (could be her brother or her father) and Matthew Oliver, her brother-in-law who married her sister Peggy.
Christiana's brother Thomas married Elizabeth Lyne in the neighbouring parish of Antony in 1809 before they moved back to St Teath to live, so presumably he maintained contact with his sister who moved to live in Sheviock in 1799.
