Brief Description of the Family

John was baptised at Sheviock on 18 Apr 1842, son of Sampson and Jane Trevan nee Northcott. He moved away from Sheviock creating the "St Austell" branch and also moved off the land and joined the Royal Navy. The 1871 census and the Navy List for Jan 1871 show that he was a Gunner 2nd Class, achieving the rank of Gunner on 4 Jan 1868 and being promoted to Gunner 2nd Class on 1 Apr 1870. He married Rachel Northoctt in Stoke Damerel early on 21 Jan 1871. It is not known if or how she was related to his mother. It appears that he was never assigned to a ship, although it's possible that he was briefly assigned to the Badger in 1874. (The index of names shows that he was, but his was not listed under the crew list for the Badger).

He left the Royal Navy some time before their second child and eldest son Will was born in Jul 1876 and joined the Merchant Navy. He drowned at sea when the SS Cardiff sank in 1882. Contemporary newspaper cuttings talk of the loss of all hands and describe him as the Second Mate and the Captain as John Maddern. Letters from Short and Dunn, the owners of the SS Cardiff, to Mrs Madron conclude that the steamer was lost on the Berlings on the night of the 29th or morning of the 30th of August 1882, was the SS Cardiff, that had been bound for Genoa.

By the time of the 1891 census Rachel is shown as a widow with son Ernest aged 1.

All of except one of John and Rachel's sons left Cornwall and photos survive of them all. I am grateful to their descendents for making the photos available.
