Brief Description

John William Stoneman Trevan was born on 3 Sep 1855 at 3 Castle St, Plymouth. He was baptised at Charles Church, Plymouth on 14 Feb 1858 along with his sister Mary Honor Trevan. By then the familiy were living at 6 Looe St. While he was a child his family moved to several addresses, all near to Charles Church. At the time of the 1871 census his occupation was given as a carpenter and he was still living at home with his parents at 3 Chapel Place.

He married Bessie Babbage in 4Q1879 in the Newton Abbott registration district. She was allegedly a relation to Charles Babbage, the popularly ackowledged inventor of the modern computer. I have not tried to investigate this story which was passed to me by one of their descendents, Chris Trevan, who is not convinced about the connection.

At the time of the 1881 census they were living at 57 Kings Gardens and his occupation was given as a House Carpenter. Their first two known children, Arthur (1881) and Elizabeth (1883-4), were born and died in Plymouth, aged only a few months. His birth certificate gives their address as 57 Kings Gardens, and her birth certificate shows the family address as 11 Ilbert Street, but this was probably Herbert (H'bert) Street and miscopied by the GRO when the certificate was issued in Sep 2001. I need to check with the Victorian maps to confirm that there was not an Ilbert Street, but there was certainly a Herbert Street. She was born on 31 Dec 1883, but her birth was not registered until 21 Feb 1884.

In 1885Q3 Bessie Trevan was born in Plymouth and she died in 1887Q1 in Bodmin. It is probable that this was their child, and this would indicate that the family moved to Bodmin sometime between Jul 1885 and Mar 1887. Son John William was born in the Bodmin Registration District and his birth was recorded in the September 1887 quarter. They were back in Plymouth by 1893 when son James was born.

John was a Master Builder and Clerk of Works when the Bodmin Railway was built. I presume it was his father who was listed in the 1890 Plymouth Directory as being John Trevan, Clerk of Works at 17 Gibbons St, but it is possible that it was him. The 1893 Plymouth Directory shows a John Trevan (could be father or son) living at 17 Addison Rd, Plymouth, and subsequently at 14 Alderney Terrace, Plymouth in the directories between 1895 and 1898, and later at 18 Seymour Avenue West in 1899 and 37 Seymour Avenue in 1900 and 1901. He was living in Plymouth at the time of the 1901 census and his occupation was listed as a carpenter and builder, but I have yet to find his address. For 1903-4 the entry for 73 Mount Gould Road, Lipson shows a John Trevan, Clerk where he remains until last listed in the 1907-8 directory. Since his father died in 1907, this was listing was presumably for his father. He was listed at 1 Oxford Place, Plymouth from 1903 until 1915, 1 year after his death. His 1st cousin twice removed, Audrey Gunn nee Trevan, wrote about her recollections of distant Trevan family members including John Trevan a builder who lived at 1 Oxford St who was involved with the building of the original Plymouth Coop Society in Frankfort St and whose name was on the foundation stone.

Bessie died in the Croydon registration district in 3Q1928.
