He was born in Yealmpton, Devon, When letters of administration for his fathers estate were granted to him in 1891 he was described as "Carpenter's mate". In his own will he described himself as "Pensioner R.N. of Victoria House, Old Road, Laira in the county of Devon in the parish of Eggbuckland". On the probate he was described as "retired Shipwright R.N." From the letters of administration for his wife's estate, there were no (surviving) children from this marriage. Both of them died in Plymouth.
