Brief Description

Samuel Lorenzo Smith Trevan was born 4Q1863 in Plymouth. His baptism has yet to be found. He was at home with his parents for the 1871 census.

He became a carpenter and builder. At the time of the 1881 census he was still living with his parents and he was a carpenter's apprentice. He married 3Q1885 in Plymouth and by the time of the 1891 census he was an employer. The census shows his wife's christian names. From searching the on-line Civil Registration index at FreeBMD on the same page as Samuel's marriage entry, it seems almost certain that her maiden name was Knight. The Plymouth Directories from 1893-1904 have him listed as a builder at 38 Tracey Street, Plymouth, the same address where the family were living at the time of the 1891 census. In the 1901 census his occupation was given as Inspector of Works. Between 1901-15 he was also listed at 48 Tracey Street, also as a builder. The 1915-6 directory lists him at 9 Torrington Place, Plymouth. He died age 57 in 3Q1921 in Plymouth.

His widow continued to live in Plymouth. She owned 14 Bedford Terrace which was rented to her husbands 1st cousin once removed, Sidney Herbert Trevan, son of Henry Meyers Trevan and Kate nee Osborne. Sidney's descendents remember that they had to leave the address since someone in the family needed to live there. The Plymouth Directories for 1929-37 show that Julia lived there herself. She died during WWII as a result of enemy action, presumably an airraid, on Saturday 13th Feb 1943, age 84. Probate records shw that she was living at 2 Whitleigh Avenue at the time of her death.
