According to the family bible that has been passed down to Heather Gray, their son John was born on 4 Dec 1806 at Crafthole and christened on 1 Jan 1807. The entry in the Bishop's Transcripts show his mother's name just as Ann. The baptism entries for their other children give her name as Mary Ann. When daughter Matilda was baptised in 1814 William was described as a grocer. 2 years later in 1816 when son Sampson Trevan Davey was baptised he was described as a blacksmith. But 3 years later when another daughter was baptised as Matilda he was described as a shopkeeper.
The churchwardens accounts show payments to a William Davies / Davey between 1814 and 1819. Some are for killing vermin, such as a kite and some stoats, and others are for candles. Since there was more than 1 William Davies / Davey in the parish they are not necessarily to the same man, but supplying candles to the church fits in well with the description of a grocer or shopkeeper.
The family emigrated to Canada, when son John was about 10 years old according to stories passed down the generations. The date appears to be contradicted by the baptisms of his younger siblings.
I need to recheck the parish register entries since there is a burial of a Matilda Davey age 10 months on 25 Mar 1821, but she was baptised on 30 May 1819. The most likely explanation is that I mistranscribed one of these 2 years, and that the family emigrated shortly after her death, since hers is the last entry in the registers for this branch of the Davey family. This is also consistent with the last payment recorded for candles being made in 1819.
