Brief Description

William Henry Trevan was born on 22 May 1841 at 34 Gloucester Street. His baptism records give his date of birth as 19 May 1840 and show that he was baptised privately on 22 Nov 1849. He was at home with his parents at the time of the 1851 census. He was admitted into St James, Stoke Damerel on 2 Aug 1852, along with his brother Henry Meirs Trevan. The family were living at 7 Moon St, Morrice Town at the time. He was still living at home with his parents at the time of the 1861 census when he was described as a shipwright.

He married for the first time at the Plymouth Register Office to Mary Jane Smale who died aged 36 in Plymouth 2Q1879.

The witnesses were John and Lucretia Mills. Lucretia was William's sister. William and John signed and Mary Jane and Lucretia made their marks.

So far I have not found him in the 1871 census.

He remarried in 2Q1880 in Plymouth. At the time of the 1881 he and his wife Melinda were living at 33 1/2 Love (Looe?) Lane and they were recorded in the census as Trevena. William's brother Adolophus was also living at the same address as a separate household but was recorded under the surname of Trevin! By the time of the 1891 census he was living in 2 rooms at 17 Lambhay Hill, not far from the Barbican, with his wife Melinda and 8 year old daughter with the same name. They lived there for most if not all of the 1890s and on into the 20th century and had twins Daisy and Dora on 9 Jan 1894 and son William Henry on 14 Mar 1897. Their birth certificates show that Daisy was the older twin by 2 1/2 hours, being born at 6:30am, whereas Dora was born at 9am. At the time of the 1901 census the family still occupied 2 rooms although there were now 4 children. His occupation was recorded as "Shipwright HM Dockyard" although the online site shows it as "Shipwright HM Dockpool". Silas Smale age 57 was living at 15 Lambhay Hill, but I have not looked into whether he was William's brother-in-law by his first marriage or not. Daughter Melinda was described as a Tunic Machinist. They were still living at the same address in 1904 when daughter Melinda married at St. Saviours Church, Plymouth.

They had 8 witnesses to the marriage, including Melinda's brother William and her sisters Daisy and Dora. 2 of the other witnesses were Harry Andrews and Lucy Andrews. The others were May Caple, Foster Hill and Susan Mimas(?).

William died in Plymouth during 3Q1919 when his age was given as 79 and his 3rd name was shown as a T. The only other time this 3rd name was used was for his 2nd marriage. His widow Melinda died in 3Q1941 also in Plymouth, aged 87.
