Wallis followed his mother's trade by becoming an apprentice draper and moving to Plymouth where he was living at the time of the 1871 census. He married Rose Swallow and his name was recorded as "Wallis Henry Trevan" in the Pancras Registration District in 1894, which was where two of his uncles and an aunt had moved.
