  2. ?Catherine Knight Trevan (1837-1837) - presumably the name Knight was used after her sister Frances's husband's family, or possibly she was the daughter of Frances Knight nee Trevan (aged 31) and not of Jane Trevan (aged 58)

Brief Description

William was baptised in St Germans on 14 Nov 1777. In approximately 1781 the family moved to the neighbouring parish of Sheviock. In 1793 he received 4d from the churchwarden at Sheviock for a 'Fitcher'. The church paid those who killed off animals and birds that would otherwise damage the crops within the parish.

No marriage details have been found for him. He appears to have moved frequently and it is not clear to me if he had three wives, or whether in one of the parishes his wife was known by a different name, Jenefer instead of Jane!

His eldest 3 children were baptised in St Breward between 1805-8 and their mother's name was given as Jane. The census information shows that wife Jane was born in St Breward. His next 3 children were baptised in St Mabyn between 1811-4 and their mother's name was given as Jenefer. They were living at Polglaze in 1813-4 and at Little Trevisquite in 1817. After this the family moved to Blarrick in the parish of Antony but used the church at Sheviock, where Catherine Runnal(l)s Trevan was buried in 1825. Catharine Runalls Treven had been baptised as daughter to William and Jenefer, not Jane, at St. Mabyn. However, she was buried at Sheviock in 1825, 4 months before Thomas Runalls Trevan was baptised as son of William and Jane in Sheviock. William was described as a labourer of Blarrick. So this raises a question; did William actually marry 3 times to Jane, Jenefer and Jane respectively, or was his wife referred to as Janie which the vicar at St Mabyn made more formal as Jenefer (for Jennie).

William lived in Sheviock Village at the time of the 1841 census when his occupation was given as Farrier, as was Jane's. He was still living in the parish on 24 Mar 1843 when he signed to witness the Churchwarden's Accounts. He died and was buried in Sheviock on 24 Nov 1846, aged 69.

After William died his widow Jane moved to Antony to live with her daughter Mary Ann Skinner. There is a small doubt over Jane's year of birth since in 1841 it was given as 60 (to the nearest 5 years). By 1851 when the census information shows them living in Antony and her aged 71. In 1861 Jane's eldest son Sampson was also widowed and living with them and her age was given as 81. However when she was buried in Sheviock the parish register records that on 22 Dec 1867 Jane Trevan of Antony was buried, aged 75.

Frances Knight nee Trevan (1806-)

Frances Trevan was named after her paternal grandmother when she was baptised on 3 Aug 1806 at St. Breward. She moved to Stoke Damerel before she married. Contemporary Trevan relatives were living in Stoke Damerel at this time, namely her father's cousin John Trevan (1758-1830) and his second wife Mary who was a widow named Mrs Thomas when they married. There is no written evidence to show that Frances knew John and Mary. She married William Knight on 13 Jun 1831 at Stoke Damerel.

William made his mark and France signed her name. The witnesses were Jno Harding and Geo Nettle.

No research has been done to look for their children, but possibly one of them was buried in the parish as Catherine Knight Trevan in 1837.

Mary Ann Trevan (1808-before 1813)

Mary Ann Trevan was baptised on 10 Jul 1808 at St. Breward. Nothing further is known about her, but presumably she died before 1813 when Sampson baptised another daughter with the same name.

Catherine Runnalls Trevan (1811-25)

Catharine Runnals Trevan was baptised on 28 Apr 1811 at St. Mabyn, daughter of William and Jenefer Trevan. She was buried on 1 May 1825 at Sheviock age 14. Her address was given as Blarrick. 4 months later William and Jane had their son Thomas Runalls Trevan baptised and William was described as a labourer of Blarrick.

Although the reason for naming their children after Thomas and Catherine Runalls is not known, the name Runalls with this spelling exists at St Breward as well as other parishes, so maybe there is a family connection through Jane? Or maybe they were named after some of William and Jane's contemporaries who they knew?

Mary Ann Skinner nee Trevan (1813- after 1881)

Mary Ann Trevan was baptised on 31 Jan 1813 at St. Mabyn, daughter of William and Jenefer Trevan of Polglaze. She was not living with her parents at the time of the 1841 census. Before the time of the 1851 census she had married Mr Skinner and been widowed. She was living with her widowed mother Jane at 17 Harvey St, Antony and they were both on Parish Relief. By the time of the 1861 census her elder brother Sampson had become a widower and all 3 of them were living togther at the Ring of Bells in Torpoint in the parish of Antony. Jane was described as a visitor, and Sampson as the head of the household. By 1871 their mother Jane had died and Jane was still living with her brother Sampson in Antony. She was described as a housekeeper and her brother as a farm labourer. By 1881 she and Sampson were still living together in Antony Village and she was described as 'Working on Farm' at age 68. Sampson was described as an agricultural labourer even though he was aged 78!

Elizabeth Trevan (1814-7)

Elizabeth Trevan was baptised on 23 Oct 1814 at St. Mabyn, daughter of William and Jenefer Trevan of Polglaze. She was buried there aged 3 on 7 Nov 1817 when the family address was given as Little Trevisquite.

Thomas Runalls Trevan (1825-)

Thomas Runalls Trevan was baptised on 4 Sep 1825 at Sheviock, son of William and Jane Trevan of Blarrick, labourer. However, his sister Catherine Runalls Trevan was buried only 4 months earlier and since there was an 11 year gap since William and Jane's previous child this does raise the possibility that she died in child-birth aged 14 and that her parents raised the child as their own. However since his mother Jane was only 46 it is still possible that she was his mother. At the time of the 1841 census Thomas was living with his aunt Elizabeth's husband (widower?) Henry Marsh at Polsco Mill in the parish of Sheviock as an Agricultural Labourer. Either Thomas emigrated or his was one of the many deaths that should have been registered but for an unknown reason was not.

Catherine Knight Trevan (1837-1837)

Catherine Knight Trevan was buried on 17 Nov 1837 at Sheviock aged 6 months. Her parents were not named, but her address was given as Sheviock Village. The 1841 census shows that it was William and Jane who were the only Trevan family living in Sheviock Village, so she is probably their daughter, and if not their grand-daughter. It seems questionable that she would be Jane's daughter due to her age being 58. Presumably she was named after some member of Frances Knight nee Trevan's new family, or might even have been her daughter but buried with her mother's maiden name added after married surname.
