Extracts from Customs Officer Records at PRO, Kew
The records of the Customs Officers are held at the Public Record Office at Kew. The CUST18 series of records date from 1675 and show for each port what the various posts are, the names of the persons fulfilling the positions and their quarterly payment. There is one book for each of Lady Day (April), Midsummer (July), Michaelmas (October) and Christmas (January).
There are also some records (CUST39) recording the superannuation (pension) received by former Officers, which includes their length of service, final income, amount of "superannuated allowance", date of receiving the pension and date of death.
