Brief Description
On 13 Dec 1822 Jane Trevan was baptised at Gwennap, daughter of William and Mary of St Day, miner. It is most probable that she was their daughter. On 13 Nov 1834 son John was baptised on the Camborne Circuit of the Wesleyan Church.
Most of what is known about this branch is infomation from 1851 onwards. The 1851 census shows the family at home at 57 Union Street, Camborne. Father William is shown as a Copper Mine Agent, son Thomas is shown as a Copper Miner, and son John is as an Engineer Mechanic. It also shows that he was born in Gwennap, but I have been unable to find any baptism for him in Gwennap or the surrounding parishes.
William's will shows that he died on 2 Dec 1853 at Camborne. The Camborne parish registers show that he was buried on 7 Dec 1853 age 51 and that his address was still Union Street.
The civil registration information has his death recorded under the name of William Trevean. William's will indicates that Mary Trevan died a widow on 18 June 1881. The civil registration of Mary Trevan's death indicates that she stayed in the Redruth area and gives her age as 75, at least 5 years younger than the 1851 census indicates!
Nothing of known of Thomas before the time of the 1851 census, where he is recorded as a copper miner, single and aged 26. The following year
Thomas married Catherine (most probably nee Hocking) (c1834-99) in 3Q1852 in the Redruth registration district when his name was recorded as Thomas Davies Trevean, and within 6 months emigrated to Australia alone on the Posthumous, which travelled in Dec 1852.
His age is recorded on the index of Inward Passengers as 20, although he would be older than that if the information given in the 1851 census was correct.
It appears that wife Catherine never joined him, since the 1861 and 1871 census returns show her living in Camborne with her widowed mother Grace Hocking.
The 1881 census shows her in Tehidy St, Camborne, with a niece and nephew staying with her.
The 1891 census shows her still living in Tehidy St, Camborne, but this time with lodgers staying with her. It appears that Thomas never returned to Cornwall.
Probate records indicate that Thomas Davis Trevan left for Bendigo in Australia, and in 1886 letters of administration were granted to his widow Catherine, although no date or place of death is given.
It is most likely that the 1883 directory entry for Mrs Treven at Tehidy Road, Camborne is for Thomas's widow Catherine.
