Gitarist Neal Schon en drummer Deen Castronovo van Journey belanden op een muzikaal zijspoor, via hun nieuwe groep Soul Sirkus. Soul Sirkus begon als een superproject met zanger Sammy Hagar en bassist Michael Anthony van Van Halen, en heette aanvankelijk Planet US. De reünieplannen van Van Halen haalden een ernstige streep door de rekening. Maar Schon zat niet bij de pakken neer. Hij vond een nieuwe vocalist in Jeff Scott Soto, die begin jaren 80 bekendheid vergaarde als zanger van Yngwie Malmsteen, en bassist Marco Mendoza, bekend van Whitesnake, Ted Nugent en Thin Lizzy. In de studio van Journey toetsenist Jonathan Cain werd een hele serie songs opgenomen voor een debuut-cd. Maar de ambities van Soul Sirkus blijven niet beperkt tot de platenstudio. Want in september staan er een paar try outs gepland.

Recensie uit Het Parool van Van Halen's album The Best Of Both Worlds:

"Van Halen is weer bij elkaar. Goede timing, want de revival van de jaren tachtig is inmiddels aanbeland bij het zware metaal uit die tijd (zie en hoor The Darkness). Het slechte nieuws is dat de hereninging van Van Halen de tweede versie van de groep betreft. Dus niet met David Lee Roth, maar met de zanger die hem halverwege de eighties verving: Sammy Hagar. The Best Of Both Worlds is een uitgebreid (twee cd's), maar willekeurig overzicht van de carrière van de groep, van 1978 tot nu. Dat nu bestaat uit drie nieuwe nummers (degelijke hardrock, maar niets om druk over te doen), voor wat betreft het verleden is er evenveel ruimte voor de periode met Roth als die met Hagar. Merkwaardig is dat de derde versie van Van Halen, met Gary Cherone als zanger, volledig wordt overgeslagen, zelfs in de hoestekst. Luisterend naar het oude materiaal moet je vaststellen dat de oorspronkelijke versie van Van Halen de beste was. Eddie Van Halen's gitaarwerk uit die tijd is nog altijd spectaculair (volgens de hoestekst is er ieder moment van de dag ergens ter wereld wel een veertienjarige die zich afvraagt hoe de gitarist in vredesnaam doet wat hij doet in spektakelstuk Eruption), maar ook de David Lee Roth van toen doet het na al die jaren nog goed: een vreselijke ijdeltuit en een botte macho, maar tegelijkertijd de enige hardrockzanger met zelfspot."

Van Halen is suing the Baltimore Orioles for at least $2 million in damages, charging that the Major League Baseball team reneged on an offer for the band to play a concert Sept. 2 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Maybe every slogan flashed on the screen wasn't quite happening right then and there, but one truism stuck out: Right Now Van Halen Is Kicking Ass!"

Van Halen's album The Best Of Both Worlds is in de Nederlandse Mega Charts Album Top 100, na binnen te zijn gekomen op plaats 28 en in de tweede en de derde week gestegen naar plaats 26 en plaats 23, in de vierde week gezakt naar plaats 27.

Van Halen's classic live video Live Without A Net is officially coming to DVD! The concert was filmed in New Haven, USA in 1986 celebrating the band's first tour with new vocalist Sammy Hagar. The video remains a favourite amongst fans and to this day is a spectacular watch and easily blows the more hyped Right Here, Right Now live release out of the water. The first release of this much anticipated DVD is due out on September 14th.

Van Halen's album The Best Of Both Worlds is in de Nederlandse Mega Charts Album Top 100, na binnen te zijn gekomen op plaats 28 en in de tweede week gestegen naar plaats 26, nu in de derde week te vinden op plaats 23!

Alex Van Halen recently told Australia's Undercover News that almost every song the band have ever finished recording since their first album in 1978 has been released.

"There are no real tracks that are unreleased," he said. "There may be two or three songs that were partially completed. If those songs were really worthwhile we would have released them back when they were written."

"One of the biggest mistakes artists can make is to go back on the stuff they passed on in the first place and throw it out as new, which it isn't," he added. "Edward is very particular in which direction he wants to go in musically and that is forward. I don't know if there is such a thing as going forward in music. It is either up, down, sideways or backwards. It goes in a circle. The intent that goes in to behind making a piece of music is as important as the perception of that piece of music. The intent is to go forward. If you go backwards, then forget it. It doesn't work. We don't go back and go through old tapes."

Van Halen reportedly worked on four songs for possible inclusion on their recently released greatest hits collection, The Best Of Both Worlds. However, only three cuts made it to the final product: It's About Time, Up For Breakfast and Learning To See.

Commented vocalist Sammy Hagar: "You wouldn't want to hear the song that didn't make the cut. It is not done. The lyrics aren't done, the melody is not done and the structure is not there. It was left half cooked. The idea is probably still good but I doubt if we would ever go back and use it because when we get back together and go in the studio it is about where you are at that moment, not about something you did back there and trying to rekindling that. It is much better to go fresh every time. It is more inspiring. It is like going back to your old girlfriend."

"There is enough music for 100 years in that studio to write songs for laying around on the floor," he added. "We had four songs and the fourth one never got completed. These three got done in time to go out on tour and I mean barely. We were still in the studio mixing and rehearsing at night and mastering and being on tour. It was pretty intense. These three were the ones that came naturally to us."

Vandaag is in de Telegraaf het artikel te vinden van journalist Jean-Paul Heck. Op de voorpagina is een schitterende foto geplaatst van Edward Van Halen in actie en op pagina 14 het volledige, paginavullende, verslag van het concert in Chicago en het zeer exclusieve interview met de broertjes opgevuld met een drietal prachtige foto's. Al met al een mooi en uitermate positief stuk!

Waar eerder David Letterman, Jay Leno en zelfs Oprah Winfrey ijskoud "nee" kregen te horen maakte Van Halen voor Nederland een uitzondering.
