Gertrude's first husband, Count Floris I, who succeeded his brother Dirk IV after his death in the battle of 1049, continued Holland's expansion southwards. Count Floris was killed by a murderer's sword in 1061 while resting under a tree, probably on orders from the German Emperor. After his murder, West-Vlieland and Rijnland, which had been acquired by his father Dirk III from the Bishop of Utrecht, Holland's eastern neighbour, were taken back again. To combine forces against the Emperor, Gertrude married the powerful Robrecht "De Fries" of Flanders, Holland's south-western neighbour, who had become Count by defeating and killing his young nephew Arnulf III "The Unfortunate" in the battle of Kassel in 1071.
For Gertrude's descendants by Floris I see the page on the Counts of Holland; and for her descendants by Robrecht I "De Fries" see the page on the Counts of Flanders.
