Vlaanderen (Flanders), meaning "Flooded land" was one of a number of "gouwen" in the west of present-day Belgium. Members of this family (the "Old branch") were the first known Lords of Flanders. The unknown daughter of Ingelram II, lord of Flanders married Waltbert of Steenland about whom nothing is known, except that he apparently took over the title from his father-in law Ingelram. Waltbert's family, to which the Count of Flanders belong, could be called the "Younger branch".

Ingelram's unknown daughter inherited the title to Flanders, which was transferred to her husband Odakar, who became the
