Jülich (Dutch: Gulik; French: Juliers) is now part of Rhineland, Germany. In 1356, Count Wilhelm V, the husband of Johanna (Jeanne) of Avesnes (the daughter of Willem III of Avesnes, Count of Holland and Hainaut) was promoted to Duke by Emperor Charles IV. In the sixteenth century the County was combined with Kleve and Berg through the marriage of the heiress Maria of Jülich to Johann of Kleve. In 1609 this line died out and Jülich and Berg became the possessions of the Neuburg family, and in 1742 of the Pfalz-Sulzbach family. In 1801 Jülich was annexed by France, and in 1814 most of it was added to Prussia except for a few parts that went to Limburg, part of the Netherlands.
