Verweij (also Verwey)
For younger generations of ancestors who are descended from this family:

Children of
(Officially:) Peter (or Pieter) Otto Verweij (1724-?)
(But in all probability:) Frederick Christoffel Willem Lodewijck graaf van Bijlandt (1719-1789)
and Anthonia ("Teuntje" or "Tuentien") van de Griend (or "van de Grient") (1742-?)
(See 5 generations back)
1. Otto Pieter Verweij
(blood-relationship 3,125 %)
* 24-2-1765 (Buurmalsen) x Jacoba van Otterloo + 2-10-1836 (Geldermalsen)
Occupation: "burgemeester" of Buurmalsen, "burgemeester", "schout" and "notaris" in Geldermalsen. Officially being the son of a
farmer and a chambermaid, it is remarkable that he received a higher education paid for by the graaf van Bijlandt, and reached important
positions. This can be regarded as proof of his true relationship to Count Frederick, and as a nice example of "noblesse oblige". Otto was also
one of the names of the Count's father. Count Frederick and his Countess had only one legitimate child, graaf Otto Willem Hendrik (1750-1818).
Otto Pieter Verweij not only had "two fathers", but also two tombstones, one he had made in 1818 for the family tomb in the church in
Geldermalsen, which has always remained empty, and one for his actual final resting place, where he was buried in 1836. From 1829 onwards it was no longer
allowed to bury the dead inside churches.
Other children, probably by Peter Verweij:
2. Jenneke Verweij
* 12-4-1767 + ?
3. Arien Verweij
* 15-4-1770 + ?
Children of
Otto Pieter Verweij (1765-1836)
and Jacoba van Otterloo (1761-1827)

1. Frederika Wilhelmina Verweij
* 15-3-1788 (Mariënwaerdt) x Dr. Jan de Heer (Geldermalsen, 16-7-1807) + 20-7-1871 (Leidschendam)
It is interesting to note that Frederika was born at the Count's estate, and that she was apparently named after him.
As far as we know the names Frederika or Wilhelmina had not been used before, neither in the Verweij nor in the Van Otterloo
family.
2. Hendrika Maria Verweij
* -12-1789 x Jan Vogelzang Hondius (20-11-1813) + 28-12-1861
3. Pieter Hendrik Verweij
* 26-1-1791 + 1812 (in Russia)

before he was killed at the age of 21.

* 2-7-1793 x I. Dirk Lodewijk Bennewitz (5-11-1817) II. Jan Willem Kerkhoven + 27-10-1849

10. Otto Arnold Verweij (See portrait)
(blood-relationship 6,25 %)
* 19-12-1803 (Geldermalsen) x Maria Adriana Knaap (12-7-1832) + 24-6-1872 (Geldermalsen)
Occupation: "schout" and "notaris" in Geldermalsen, after his father's death. Around 1830, at the time of the short military
conflict over Belgian independence, our great-great-grandfather, as "schout", had received the order to arrest all Belgians.
During a stormy night, there was a knock on the door, and a Belgian deserter appeared who asked for refuge. He was hidden
in the attic for a couple of months, after which he could return home. The deserter was an artist by profession (his name is
not known), and he made some beautiful leather wallpaintings for one of the rooms, which were greatly admired. Our
grandmother Maria Adriana Verweij said she could still clearly remember them. Unfortunately, the paintings were lost when the
house was demolished around 1900.

want to marry her.

the Dutch East-Indies.
3. Jeanne ("Jen") Marie Louise Verweij (See portrait)
* 29-9-1884 + 1971
As a young woman, our great-aunt Jen was refused permission by her father to marry a "dominee" (clergyman), it is said because this was
thought to be below the family's status. She remained unmarried, and with her sister Louise cared for their ailing father until his
death. (Apparently, this was not below their status.) More than 60 years later, aunt Jen heard "her" reverend speak on the radio, and
she could not hold back her tears.
4. Maria ("Marie") Adriana Verweij (See portrait 1), (See portrait 2), (See family portrait 1), (See family portrait 2)
(blood-relationship 25 %)
* 22-1-1886 (Geldermalsen) x Hendrik Willem van der Voort (Den Haag 4-11-1909) + 6-5-1975 (Katwijk)
Occupation: Our grandmother was permitted to have training as a schoolteacher in Haarlem, on the precondition that she would
never actually work as such, because her parents thought this to be a rather too low-status job. In Haarlem, Marie met her
future husband Hendrik Willem ("Han"). Hendrik Willem's sister Alexandrina Charlotte Paulowna van der Voort was married to
Charles Marie Felix van Rossum, a son of the elder Ch.M.F. van Rossum and his second wife, Cornelia Veenendaal, and
therefore a half-brother to Marie's mother. Fortunately for us descendants, there were no objections to Hendrik Willem's
status. Marie and Han soon got married, and went to the Dutch East-Indies where our grandfather, as a young civil engineer,
would have better career-prospects than in Holland. The couple moved from one outpost to another, where our grandfather directed
the building of roads and other infrastructure projects. They ended up in Surabaya, where our grandfather had been appointed director of the seaport.
After our grandfather's term in the tropics was completed in 1932, they returned to Holland and lived through the German occupation. They were ordered by the
Germans to move out of their home in Scheveningen, part of The Hague, and settled in nearby Wassenaar. After the war, our grandfather
became an alderman in Wassenaar and held many other functions. Our grandmother died in a home for the elderly in Katwijk at the age of 89,
having survived her husband for almost 19 years.
For her descendants see the page on Van der Voort.

Joannes Petrus was Tine's cousin, his father was captain Joannes Petrus van Rossum, a brother of her mother Jeanne Marie
Louise van Rossum.
