Such mounds are charac-
terized by alternating light
grey and darker brown or
black layers. The mound
was raised with light grey
clay material from its sur-
roundings. The darker layers
were the top-surface of the
mound for some time.
Charcoal and other material
dumped by the Indians accu-
mulated, before the mound
was built up to a higher
level.
