BITTERFELD
1-2 MAY 1999
(where we arrived a little late in the night, as usual)

A new competition in the former east Germany again. Last year Senftenberg, now Bitterfeld. Bitterfeld is situated approximately 100 km. north of Tautenhain and approx. 150 km. south of Berlin. For us a travel of about 600 km. which makes this combat competition almost the nearest to drive to. We have never been there but heard about it already a lot and it is the first competition this year, we want to fly and smell the grass (to camp is maybe a second hobby from Helle and me and especially when the luxury is not overdone)

For the first time in 8 years a competition was organized. Last time a competition was organized was 1991. Than the club was closed because the owner (the city??? or the industrial company??) asked a rent of 1000 DEM every month. Impossible to pay for a small club. However last year things changed and the club could be opened again. In the 8 years the club was closed some idiots found it funny to destroy almost all things (windows, club house and so on).
The club members had to start from scratch and it is amazing to see what they have reached within 1 year. They even have an employee who is repairing things and keeps everything clean. He is paid by the city from a special budget. There is 1 tarmac circle and 1 very nice grass field. The tarmac circle is also used as a parking place for the company that is situated directly next to club area. This means that there are some good agreements about when to park and when to fly. Another minor problem is that on a field close to the club area there is a dog training centre. There they try to learn dogs things maybe because the dog owner is incapable to learn things himself. However, everybody has his own hobby and this field was used as a camping side. Nicely surrounded by trees and don't tell me that birds doesn't make noise.

About the competition itself,

There were 50 participants in 5 categories (F2A, F2B, F2B-B, F2D, F4B).
As usual I will just report about the combat competition. For more information about the other categories surf to

Just 13 combat pilots which is a little less for a German competition but there is an explanation for it. Tomas Mejzlik and Pavel Kucera didn't reach the Germany because the Chrysler automatic gearbox broke down, Gunther Staffel and Marcus Muhlparzer had the intention but the first got ill, the second was too tired. Lothar Hentschel preferred to finish his L+L engines. The pilots from Sebnitz didn't show up for several reasons. Otherwise it would have been a 25+ competition.

But the advantage is that their is enough time to practice and to have a good night rest.
And still with the 2-live system the winner will have to fly enough times to have a satisfactory feeling about winning this competition.

New was the AKN engines that Rudy showed. The venturi is placed on the other side of the crankcase, 180 degrees turned from what we accept as being normal. The idea behind it must be that the air/fuel doesn't have to go all the time around the corner. This is a more easy way for the air/fuel to travel. The rumor is that the speed is about 22.3 seconds for 10 laps which is at least 1 second faster than the engines I know. I have flown Rudy twice and had the idea that he was fast in the second bout but maybe it had to do with the fact that I lost that bout. During the rest of the competition he has used his normal AKN engines which are also fast.

Well Rudy won, Armin Muhlparzer was runner up and he gets my compliments for his improvement again. Last year already he had improved a lot but this year he also seems to be able to concentrate longer. Concentration for 4 minutes is still a problem for a lot off pilots.

Conclusion: a good and well organized competition which a nice atmosphere. The club members are enthusiastic and proud to have competitors on their field.

Next year we go again. Thanks !!
