1999 DCI Amerongen, The Netherlands
World-Cup F-2-D the 31. July and 1. August

After a break of 14 years the Dutch Combat International (DCI) was organized again. Since the last time is was organized (1985) a lot of pilots asked me when it would be organized again. I had to disappoint them because I don't have the time nor the skills to organize such a competition.
Happily we have persons in Holland with those skills and with the right connections to make it happen again. The most important person to mention is
JACCO DE RIDDER who started talking about organizing it again 2 years ago. And it was not only talking, 41 competitors in Combat was the result and therefore immediately the biggest competition of the year.....
Also F2B Stunt and F2B beginner Stunt was organized, I won't report about Stunt because I didn't see so much of it, sorry Stunt pilots.

The picture on the right shows Jacco de Ridder.
It is for me not possible to name all the others who have been helping but I can assure you that there were a lot who showed up and helped a lot. It was more or less a reunion.

About the competition: The flying field was laid out on the Hockey field and the weather was maybe to good. 30 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 33 on Sunday. A real hard time for all competing or helping but we managed within the time giving from the mayor of Amerongen. We have been flying in 1 circle (for Stunt there were 2 extra circles) and after the bout was flown pilots were asked to go to the reserve circle so the next bout could be started as soon as possible.

For me this competition was also nice because I now had the possibility to defend my title from 1985. Loosing the first round against Peter Ruckerl and winning the second on just 5 seconds gave me the idea that a miracle should happen. My mechanics (Vincent Bernecker and Rik Olijve) helped me through with very fast pitwork when needed.
We also saw that the 2 juniors are getting better and better every competition. If Xavier Riera didn't win against Armin Muhlparzer it would have been me against 2 juniors. Add the age of the 2 juniors and there would still be a gap of 8 years. Xavier won over Armin but lost against Michael and so Michael and I had to fly the final.

Besides prices for the winners there were also prices for the best 2 mechanics.
Pavel Kucera and Vincent Bernecker got the honors.

Happily for me Michael listens very well to his father (Hans and former combat pilot). Hans always tells Michael that he should be careful with me and that he should let me win because I am old and he as youngster will have his chances later. I don't know if Michael is listening well because I really had to struggle for my points.

Before the final was flown there was a 1 minute quietness. This was done because Werner Grothe (Germany) died on the Tuesday before the competition. Werner has been flying combat for years and won DCI ones. I spoke Werner this year in Bitterfeld and he told me that he wanted to visit the competition. This 1 minute was extremely emotional but probably the best place for a memorial service.
